Bill, Kerobokan has a wonderful gated community. or more of the lease up front. This alone stops many of those who are toying with the idea of coming here to live.
Ok, sounds great, so where is it?
no.idea
and the hairdresser I use there was complaining about no clients .
No bloody wonder! Have a look at your avatar.

Interesting comment. I do not have a spare room in our hotel plus our villas are all fully booked. We operate at around 90% occupancy over the entire year.
For the OP's information here is the Bali Association of Hoteliers occupancy rates for last year. In 2015 the prediction is for 10-25% higher. It should be noted that this prediction was based before the internal problems of Lion Air, complaints by the Chinese Consul of the way the Chinese are being treated at the airport, and possible retaliation if the executions are carried out.
ROOM OCCUPANCY RATE OF CLASSIFIED HOTEL IN BALI 2014.
MONTH 2014

Dear TCollins
My family and I are planning on doing the same as yours in 2016 - we are also from Australia. Just wondering what school you are planning on sending your children to? At this stage we have only one school aged child who next year will be in year 2. Would love to know which school you consider to be a good one.
Regards

Where is that? Google maps can't seem to locate it. Is it a town in North Kuta?

Sorry Bill for not responding...My Villa had a direct strike by lightning on Friday afternoon but the only damage was I lost all Internet till today.
Turn left from the airport and the first area is called Tuban...then Kuta...then Legian...then Seminyak. Continuing on along Jl Kerobokan brings you to a larger area of Umulas 1 & 2 and Kerobokan which is the area covered between Jl Kerobokan and Jl Semer and beyond. Continue left on Jl Raya Canggu and divert to Echo Beach or further on to Tanah Lot. Avoid Raya Canggu and continue on Jl Kerobokan, avoiding the left turn at Raya Canggu, and whatever they call it past Tierra Gatsu (supermarket) will take you to the ferry at Gillimanuk....or turn right there on Gatot Subroto...... and it goes to UBUD.

We haven't heard from Tcollins for a while but, as you seem very interested in moving to Bali, I'll bump the thread.
Tcollins mentioned he had a place for his 2 children in the Australian International School which is a very well known school here in Jl Kerobokan. I'm not Australian and know nothing about the school, other than its location, so suggest google.
The school is on a very busy street, near the Kerobokan jail and many supermarkets etc...it appears to be a popular school and the vicinity is alive with expats as it's near the entertainment area of Legian/Seminyak and the beaches.
Many expats, children schooling or not, including myself, live in this area...my driver calls it kampung bule...I'll leave you to google the translation.
Fire any questions...my preference would be to live in Sanur but I have no knowledge of kids schools there...maybe smoke or no idea can assist in that search.
