I also read that an exam in Bahasa Indonesia needs to be passed before issuing an IMTA (work permit)

This is getting more & more insane....soon they will announce that only red-haired people who can sing dangdut get a working-permit Too many indonesian under qualified workers...so they try everything to prohibit gain access for foreigners...this INCLUDES filipinos & vietnamese

I wonder if they have passed that fine line between difficulty and ignoring. If a regulation becomes too difficult to follow then people tend to just ignore it, as is happening. I also wonder if the people writing these regulations (immi) see any benefit to themselves in a general non-compliance.(rhetorical question warning).

We should remember that Indonesia is a signator to the Asean Economic Co-operation Zone (AEC) which is 'supposed' to be implemented by years end. This AEC means the 'free movement of goods and specialized labor'...maybe the RI Gov't is specifying what 'Special Labor' will comprise.....before the vote.

A friend and I were discussing ways around stupid regs (as you do here) and it was suggested that a possible way would be to apply(buy) for citizenship in Laos, Burma or Cambodia and through that be able to work here too. Worth thinking about for those that work (filthy word!).

Do Laos, Burma (Myanmar) or Cambodia offer dual citizenships? A quick google answers my own question. Laos...no dual citizenship Myanmar...no dual citizenship Cambodia...dual citizenship allowed....main criteria is to have resided in Cambodia at least 7 years.

Does the mighty dollar talk loudly there? Oh yeah! Most western countries will give you your "real" nationality back if you ask nicely too. Should you need to sacrifice it to become a national of say Burma or Laos. I believe Vietnam is also quite easy to get citizenship and with the Philippines most Americans were born half way there.

In 1990. when I retired, we searched this idea of where could we reside and maybe take up citizenship...I even used expensive lawyers to assist. I was surpised that there aren't as many countries available to a Brit/Indonesian as expected...but I was only looking for legal ways...and that was 25 years ago. We chose Canada....and they accepted us..:love_heart: Changing one's nationality is no mean feat...I have an American Jewish friend recently become Chinese (Hong Kong). I'm still figuring why but presume, like many Americans, it's to avoid excessive taxation. Philippine/Vietnam make it easy for previous Nationals to regain their citizenship after emigrating to other countries (mainly USA and Australia)...the Govt's make lots of money when the National returns with the wealth he acquired abroad......but I'm not so sure they permit foreigners to become citizens. Are these new rules or just in forcing old rules? You just need to tell them that you are going to attend a course and your in. My wife went to a meeting about dual citizenship about 3 month ago, story is that only Indonesian citizen would be able to get it. We would not.
