My RI friends and families see no problems in the future with it .
Possibly why the saying "Ignorance is Bliss" came about. The closest translation I can find is "ketidaktahuan adalah kebahagiaan".
As I had lunch today I read a local magazine article where the Editor summarized....
'Last year Indonesia paid US$2.1 M to save Satinah, a convicted murderer in Saudi, and yet has shot 5 foreigners for a crime much less grave.' said Human Rights Watch who said 'Indonesia applies double standards.'
In 2007 the Indonesian Constitutional Court recommended changes to law to say 'if a prisoner has been on death row for 10 years and not been executed, and is on good behaviour, the death sentence should be commuted to minimum 20 years'. The Courts senior judge is now in jail!!!
In 2003 one of the Bali bombers, Ali Imron, got life imprisonment, not the death penalty, for showing remorse after his involvement in murdering 202 people....mainly Australians. This compares with the 2 Australians who, not only didn't murder anyone and have shown remorse and, after 10 years in jail, are approved by the prison warden as having been rehabilitated....but now face the shooting gallery.
The Editor says it begs the question..."What message is Jokowi sending and what retaliation will Indonesia receive from foreign countries...has he already jeopardized his relationship with the International Community so early in his tenure?"
I hope President Jokowi had a good chat with the Malaysian Prime Minister yesterday about the reported 75 Indonesians on death row in that country.
link...
The Death Penalty in Malaysia "A 2012 report states that there are at least 75 Indonesians on death row. [117]"
I'm not debating drug trafficking...I'm talking about the inconsistancy of the Indoneisan Justice system and the Presidents hasty move to gain public support, which, according to smoke's friends...apparently works...:icon_wink:
IMO. It glares like a beacon of Human Rights Abuse...and that cannot be good for the country.
