I keep getting spam about satellite internet but, as soon as I open, it says not available in your area. Does anyone know about satellite internet...is it available anywhere and, if so, is it any good? I know that some cities have internet coverage, using antennas, but if the world was covered by internet-capable satellites, like GPS, it would be a wonderful technology...do any of you techies know if this is a possibility? Don't hold your breath - no matter where they transmit from if they transmit into any country on Earth they will need permission from that country's version of the US FCC (communication dept.) to use bandwidth there. Unless they are based on the moon or Mars then there will be jurisdiction issues.

Washington: A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet - a global network of cube satellites broadcasting Internet data to all the people on the planet - for free. The idea is to offer free Internet access to all people, regardless of location, bypassing filtering or other means of censorship, according to the New York based non-profit organisation, Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF). MDIF proposes that hundreds of cube satellites be built and launched to create a constellation of sorts in the sky, allowing anyone with a phone or computer to access Internet data sent to the stations. The organisation claims that 40 per cent of the people in the world today are still not able to connect to the Internet - and it's not just because of restrictive governments such as North Korea - it's also due to the high cost of bringing service to remote areas, 'phys.org' reported. An Outernet would allow people from Siberia to parts of the western US to remote islands or villages in Africa to receive the same news as those in New York or Tokyo. The Outernet would be one-way - data would flow from feeders to the satellites which would broadcast to all below. MDIF plans to add the ability to transmit from anywhere as well as soon as funds become available. MDIF has acknowledged that building such a network would not be cheap. Such satellites typically run USD 100,000 to USD 300,000 to build and launch.

To say it's not available in your area is rubbish and means you are dealing with some bogus mob. The thing about satellite Internet connection is that you can get it anywhere if you can point a dish up towards a geo-stationary satellite that may be a bit east or west of us. General info is at Satellite Internet access - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Now you may think that sounds good and wonder why not many people in Bali are using it. The reasons are: 1. expensive 2. reasonable download speeds but slow upload 3. long latency - the distance travelled up to the satellite and then back down means everything is delayed by a third of a second or so. For Skype this is awful, for Internet banking and similar it is pretty bad, but for straight downloads, the latency is not a problem. The internet we usually use is based on undersea cables so the distances are much shorter and the latency is acceptable - at least what we are used to. That's good info ronb...I enjoyed the read from your link and it would appear that we may have satellite internet sooner than I imagined...maybe in RI in my lifetime, but, more likely....afterlifetime..:ghost: Your link said they launched another satellite from the Russian launch site only last week but it will take some months to align it in the correct orbital position for data internet RX/TX. I remembered that Inmarsat was the UK company that did all the analysis of where MH370 may be located in the South Indian ocean. Basically they monitor shipping in the open waters but their satellite picked up the ACAR's transmissions from the Rolls Royce engines of the B777. Some years ago I saw their satellite telephone at a boat show, before cellphones were common-place, but a single minutes call cost more than my annual pension.
