Not much of a surprise really. Of course everyone living or working here should learn the language, but making it a requirement was never going to be enforceable. Especially with no standardized test in place.

Like everything, no thought went into it. Especially as there were hints that there would be a reading/writing section as well. Alright, difficult, but at least they use the same alphabet/numerical system as most of the Western World so a little bit easier for most of the 'round eyes' , it would be a bugger for the likes of the Japs though.

If the Japanese hadn't bombed Pearl Harbor, which 'invited' USA into WW2 in Asia, Indonesians today would likely be using Japanese as their official language. Soekarno certainly buddied up to the Japanese in his quest to rid Dutch colonialism. President Widodo was in Tokyo yesterday trying to get Japanese investment back into RI, particularly the Batang coal fired power plant being developed by the Japan Itochu group but 'on-hold' for four years due to Indonesians maneuvering for more money. If the demand for bahasa Indonesia language is now applied...imo, little hope for any investment and a waste of a trip!

It should be remembered that President Sukarno when aged 57 met, and subsequently married, a 19 year old Japanese celebrity whom he called Dewi Sukarno when she converted to Islam. Today Dewi lives in Tokyo... Maybe Jokowi gave her a visit this trip to Tokyo...just to say 'hi' from Dewi's step-daughter......Megawati.:icon_wink:
