Indonesia has the death penalty for drug trafficking...of that there is no doubt and it is well advertised. Indonesia has many other laws that no-one seems concerned about and are hardly ever applied....except if some under-the-table money can be squeezed. Indonesia has many corrupt police, prosecutors, lawyers and judges....who execute law. Indonesia has many inept politicians....who create law. Indonesia has a 'popularly voted' new President whose popularity has recently declined. The President has the privilage to show clemency. It may make good 'blusukan' to show [B]no [/B]mercy for those evil (even tho' rehabilitated, according to those within the prison) foreigners that were smuggling drugs 'OUT' of the country because the mass of those voters may think the President is a strong-willed leader. But I suggest the rest of the world will see it as it really is and the same 'populace who voted for him' will suffer any consequence of retaliation. The Indonesian President has said he will not show any clemency to any drug traffickers and authorised the execution of those who have been in jail for 10+ years. The drug problem has increased in that time scale and the 'threats' of execution has not abated that fact. Executing people today, who committed the crime years ago and had nothng to do with recent events, is not going to change the drug problem one iota. Also, others on death row, realizing the President's declared policy, are hardly going to be willing, co-operative convicts whilst awaiting their final day. It's possible jail crime will increase. This is simple sycophancy to the populace by the President, and his advisors, to divert attention from the [B]real[/B] issues of his government....which is a power struggle, corruption and nepotism.
