Using a logarithm developed by Castrol motor oil, results reveal what locals have known for a long time, Jakarta is now officially the city with the worst traffic in the world.
The index revealed that cars in the Indonesian capitol were stop and started 33,240 times a day. Of 78 countries reviewed, Jakarta was named the no. 1 city in the world for the worst gridlocks, with another Indonesian city, Surabaya coming in 4th.
Second was Istanbul, with Mexico City coming in third and St Petersburg in Russia placed 5th.
The information was gathered through TomTom navigational devices using an algorithm to determine the number of times a car started and stopped per kilometre, then multiplied it by the average annual driving distance in the country.
Trending big on social media yesterday, one local Twitter user, Renzy Heartclay, sarcastically echoed the sentiments of many Jakartan drivers, “Congratulations Indonesia! Jakarta is ranked number one globally, Surabaya number fourth.”
