A Wanganui man arrested in Bali for allegedly trying to smuggle almost 2kg of methamphetamine onto the island was on his first trip out of New Zealand - and his son fears he is the victim of an internet dating scam. Antony Glen De Malmanche, 52, was arrested in at Bali International Airport in Denpasar on Monday and is being held by customs. Methamphetamine is in the most serious drug class in Indonesia and anyone convicted of trafficking faces the death penalty. De Malmanche, a beneficiary originally from Palmerston North, was travelling to Bali to see a woman he had met on an internet dating website. Meanwhile..according to frontpage Jakpost today, the police raided several kiosks in Depok and confiscated many litres of bootleg liquor which has killed some 25 Indonesians and over 100 are still in intensive care. The psychiatrist explanation is 'Many people find happiness and satisfaction but don't have enough money to buy real liquor.' Therefore, I question the veracity of this 'so-called drug abuse' created by foreigners. Assuming it was eradicated overnight...would the result of Indonesian people dying be any different? If the price of alcohol is out of their means....how can they afford methamphetamines? Seems to me the only people affected by the import of those drugs are foreigners themselves and, perhaps, 'Indonesian Mafia!'

My moonshiner buddy says it's all to do with temperature and he throws away the first cupful when he's a-brewin. Says that's where the methanol is. Seems if the "authorities" want to cut back on methanol bodies they should just teach the public how to do it right? Maybe give em all thermometers? Must be cheaper than hospitals and morgues. Oh, Davina you do know the difference between "meths" and methanol?! I seem to remember there is some history there...
