Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, has told Indonesia it may recall its ambassador if Australia goes ahead with executing two Australians.
“I do not want to speculate related measures that would occur if the Indonesian government were to implement the threat to execute Australians. Currently we continue to represent both of them as much as possible, “said Julie Bishop.
The fate of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, convicted in 2005 as part of the Bali Nine heroin smuggling ring, remains in the balance as a decision on Chan’s clemency has not been decided. The law states the two must be executed together.
Both Brazil and the Netherlands have recalled their ambassadors after Sunday’s execution of six death row inmates, including citizens of both countries.
Ms. Bishop said that to date she hasn’t received any response from the Indonesian government but will continue to make every effort to intervene on behalf of the two Australian men.
