Markit Davita I hope you don't mind but I copied and pasted your comment on the Jakpost article as I thought it was so good - hope you don't mind, if you do say and I'll delete it (or try).
balinews The number of tourists who misuse their visas having entered Bali has increased by almost 50 percent this year. Ngurah Rai airport immigration official Mohamad Soleh said his office had deported 114 foreigners as of November this year, compared to 78 in 2013. “Most were using a tourist visa to work in Bali,” he said recently. In addition, several foreigners have been deported for committing crimes in Bali. “Foreigners who have committed a crime and served their prison sentence are deported immediately on their release,” Soleh added. He said the immigration office had actively deployed officials to investigate foreign workers in the province who were allegedly violating their tourist visas. They were focusing on Badung regency at this time, he said. Badung regency is home to the most vibrant tourist areas and entertainment on the island, and incorporates well-known places like Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua. Ngurah Rai International Airport is also located in the regency. Tourism contributes more than 90 percent to the regency’s income. Teamed with Denpasar, Badung generates almost half of the island’s income, which has enabled it to become the richest regency, able to subsidize other less-fortunate regencies in Bali. davita I read this article in the Jakpost and was almost provoked to write to the newspaper about their journalese. By any definition the word 'Rampant' means of 'out of order or control' and has a connotation, in English, of some catastrophic proportion. In 2013 there were, according to RI's statistics, some 3.27 million visitors to Bali. The report says 78 were deported. I'm not mathematically inclined, and can be corrected, but I calculate 0.0024% of visitors. This past year to date, assuming the same visitors, some 114 were deported. My trusty calculator says that equates to 0.0035%.... and the article says that is a 'Rampant' increase! Some 6,500 cases of dengue were reported in Bali in 2013 and 4 died, and 36 confirmed cases of rabies in the first 5 months of 2014. Also, 500 people died in road accidents in 2013......yet very little comment of 'rampant' from Jakpost journalists or the Indonesian Ministry of Health. Those 114 should consider themselves lucky to be considered as 'rampant' and deported...better than getting dengue/rabies or dying in a road accident.
