I'm looking to buy a simple printer, possibly wifi enabled, for normal printing needs - occasional picture (nothing high quality, just for the album) some maps and such like and I would appreciate any recommendations from the users here on Bali. Requirements seem to be (if I've missed anything important please advise):Reasonable print qualityEasy and cheap alternative ink accessRobust ability to withstand the tropical environment (for instance all the USB plugs on my PC have rusted and are only just usable).I'll be getting it from Europe so must not be only available here. Very much "Ta" Markit

A Canon Pixma IP1300 was given to me when I bought a cheap laptop 4 years ago. I have the cartridges refilled for about 5 times each for a fraction of the new price and I print quite a lot (extensive manuals in color and pictures etc). The quality is super for such a cheap and simple printer. What you mean by wifi enabled I don't understand.

We have a Canon MP258. Probably cost around 1 million. We got the modification so you don't need the cartridges and you can fill the ink up yourself. The ink wells sit outside the printer so you need to be a bit care not to knock it or tape them up to the printer. It has a copy function which is useful also for visa time. A wireless function would be useful. I heard about a wifi print server you can get which enables you to print from any kind of device, like ipad etc without having to install the print drivers. I wouldn't mind getting something like that if it was available here. I would suggest just buying one here and I don't really think there is any advantage buying it overseas. They will also do the ink modification for an extra one or two hundred thousand.

Integrated scanner? (often hard to find one without these days)I find Cannon to be pretty robust & last for at least their warranty period, but the INK is the $$ killer - I guess the decision comes down to what 3rd party inks are easily available. (get a few extra genuine ink cartridges, to keep as spares or as backup incase one clogs-up) I'd suggest the Canon MP190 series (mine has wifi which works well), but they have so many & keep changing them, adding features to them taking away some etc I'd hesitate to 'recommend'.Not sure how you'd cope with the rusting USB though But be sure to keep the paper dry.@ Dick: Wifi enabled means he can have the printer in one room & computer (or several computers) elsewhere in the house and print a document without actually connecting a wire between the two.... it works by using a form of magic commonly found throughout Indonesia, so no problems on that score). In case of connection failure the recommended technician is a Bomoh such as this chap caught in the act of reconnecting an expired printer with the spirit world...... but might require joining a junket of politicians to Europe to understand the usage protocols.

Shog I don't know if it's medicine day today or you got laid last night but I've given you 2 very, very important "likes" today without any promise of cheese. Please keep it up :icon_mrgreen:A Canon of some size, shape or description does appear to be the odds on choice so far. Any feelings for an HP?
SHoggard
Ooohhh stopit, big boy!Absolutely no feelings for HP (other than the sauce they make that is incompatible with their printers).I tend not to have feelings for machinery....That said, I have noticed a growing, and somewhat worrying, fondness for Brother, but that's an entirely different story. If I were you I'd stick with Canon man (ahem!)

Nearly 2 years ago, I went to a shop in RTC, one-floor up near back stairs, and bought an Epson TX121 that they then modified with external tanks. The place was a hive of activity, with many technicians squatting on floor making these mods. Recently, it had a problem and I went back. The shop is still there, but is no longer the same hive of activity. Why? It seems it is because Espon Indonesia has released what they call ink tank system printers which work the same way but come with an Epson warranty and use genuine Epson ink bottles if you want, or else the other no-names ink if you like. So I suggest you look at the Epson L350 (see Ink Tank System Printers), available from that shop near the back steps, and elsewhere. So the question is - how long will the rest of the world remain hostage to the small ink cartridges that are way over-priced so that before long you spend more on ink than on the original printer?Oh, and they fixed our printer at modest cost so we are still using the modified TX121.

Thanks Ron, frankly that is exactly why I've shied away from Epson - their ruinously small and expensive inks. If I get a printer from afar I'll probably have it modified at RTC too. Any idea what the aforementioned Epson inks cost? Please real and counterfeits if you know.

If you look at the pic on Epson Ink Tank System Printers you can see the genuine Epson bottles, fairly small - 70ml I think, and I think they are something like 69,000 each. The non Epson inks at RTC are in bigger bottles, maybe 200 ml, and I don't remember the prices. I did ask the guys if the non Epson ink was OK in the Epson L series printers and they said yes. The price of the L350 printer is around 2 juta. The ones without scanner are a bit less. There is a wikipedia article on these ink tank systems at Continuous ink system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I should have brought one then and there as the prices here are more expensive. From what I remember we got them down to 1.6

I have had a number of ink jet printers from both HP and Epson, and find them a pain and ink extravagant. Are laser printers still impractically expensive for the small jobs needed in non-commercial applications?

I have a HP 4620...I print on it every day downloading my sons school work from Australia..Very trustworthy and can buy the cartridges in Bali..
SHoggard
Lea, Wifi that good is it? ;)
Markit
Lea that looks like a likely candidate what about the ink prices/replacement?
Lea
Just replaced cartridges last week...120 000 rupiah for one...In Australia almost double...

Markit, I have a Pixma iP2770 you can have if you want. It is only a printer. I purchased a new printer, scanner, photocopier so have no use for the other printer. The cartridges cost 30,000 and 60,000 to be refilled. They can be refilled about 5 times before needing to buy new ones.I went for a Canon MP287, this has the external ink storage that Spicy mentions. The four containers hold 100 cc of ink each. This cost somewhere around the one million price as well.

I use HP, they are cheap to buy and do good copies and prints. Ink is always the expence with most printers.

Ron that is a kind and generous offer and I really, really hate to turn it down but "she who must be obeyed" wishes a copier/scanner/printer/wifi machine and for the sake of peace, and now I can get her to pay for it, I will try to fill that order. I don't care what the rest of them say about you I think you are OK!!
