We will be traveling to Bali in May/ June this year. There will be 5 adults in our group, all have been to Bali before. We will have our own car and self drive. While staying in Lovina we have decided to do a day trip. We will start in Lovina and head over the mountains to Medewi, stopping at the Bunut Bolong (drive-thru tree). Then continuing towards Negara and on to Gilimanuk. We will then travel along the north coast passing through Pemuteran on our way back to Lovina. We are hoping to stop off to see the turtle hatchery and Pearl farm and maybe fit in some snorkeling. We wanted to see the Bull races in Negara but all the info I could find (not much) seems to say that we will be there too early in the year. Does anyone have any ideas for what we can see and do on this trip, especially in the areas around Negara. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance Jane

I would suggest taking at least 2 days for that - stop over in Negara.

What I wanted to know is what would there be to see in Negara? None of the travel guides have much to say about that area.

what about the bull races in Negara?
Jane_n
From what info I can find on the Bull races they appear to be held from late June and we will be in the area the 1st week of June. Also it is hard to find out exactly where they are held. Do you know when and where they are held?

If you really really want a bull race in May / June in Negara I might be able to organise it? Is it really that necessary? In case I will not take any money ( I never take money for stuff like this) but we'll see how much the boys want
Jane_n
Hi All,Everyone seems to fixated on the bull races in Negara which don't appear to be happening at the time we will be there. Maybe we can catch them on our next visit to Bali. Sakumabali we do not need to see the races that much to organise them for us to see, but thanks anyway.Just wondering what else we should see while we are passing through the area from Medewi to Gilimanuk.Jane

as far as I know there ain't much to see or do in the west, sorry..but in gilimanuk at warung lina might be worth to stop for an amazing ayam betutu.
sakumabali
Good point ayam betutu!!! :eagerness::eagerness:Actually Negara is a lovely town and I ehem lived there for three years (how did I survive this? I still don't know)but even me - after I read your thread - couldn't say what you HAVE to see there :(((Some ricefields on the way there (highway) are the nicest I have ever seen!!

It's a lovely drive that you can really do in about a day and a half. Start out in Tabanan (industrial city of no particular charm) and head down to the coast, if you leave the main roads there are some lovely paddy fields and the locals are very welcoming and there is the occasional western hotel/hometay/rental villa to stay at. But your target was west wasn't it?The road to Negara is busy and full of potholes so take a car with good AC and springs. You will be in Negara in 2 hours max - go straight through as it is another city of small charm and is basically a port for traffic to and from Java. Once through Negara there is some lovely countryside and depending upon the season it can be quite dry but the only thing to see there of note is the National Park, I'm told, I hate national parks. You always feel like shooting your family and having a picnic - not necessarily in that order. The road after the National Park is headed back towards Lovina and is full of potholes and scalding hot (independent of season). Once you start seeing the signs for Lovina you can relax there are whorehouses for the kids, booze for the old man and you can go Dolphin watching/hunting or to a local hospital to have your back put into traction after all them fecking potholes. Keep us informed of your trip :icon_e_wink:

Thanks Markit for your reply. I did say that we would be starting our trip from Lovina. So we will not be traveling anywhere near Tabanan on this particular day. After reading reply's to peoples questions on this forum I thought that I might get some helpful reply's here, but I seem to have been wrong.Jane

@jane_n..well, if trying to safe you from a long time in a car without seeing anything worth seeing, or the chance of doing something is not helpful...then maybe you can tell us all after your trip WEST what was worth seeing there and what was worth doing...as for another tip (although it might be not helpful or appreciated), menjangan island - travelling east from gilimanuk left side of the road, inside the national park..might be worth taking a boattrip towards a little island off the coast, temples. or after that 'stop' you can make a left into a 'resort', without having to pay anything you can go up a high tower for pretty spectacular views
Jane_n
Gilbert thanks for your reply. At least you have made some suggestion as to some things to see on our trip. We may try going up the high tower for the views. What is the name of the resort that you mention. Has anyone stopped off at the Bali Starling pre-release centre in the national park, if so is it worth a stop here?

My friend said it's taken from the restaurant, top of tower? I just found it on FB

After reading reply's to peoples questions on this forum I thought that I might get some helpful reply's here, but I seem to have been wrong.Jane
The truth is Jane: there is not a lot to do on the west side of Bali apart from temples, national park and catching a ferry to Java.
sakumabali
Cool, from the Bali side looking across to the island?
Yes I believe...@Mat: there are beautiful ricefield (scenerys), Negara has not many hotels & western restaurants, one disco & not many touristsbut it's funny for a day or two being in a city with 100.000 citizen on bali without seeing a western face....kids still LOOKING "Bule, Bule"and you have mountains there (some are quite high) and if you leave the "highway" and drive towards them you will see some very nice stuff, rivers, ocean view and the quiet beauty of the mountains of course...yes there's NOTHING but it's nice for sure

The truth is Jane: there is not a lot to do on the west side of Bali apart from temples, national park and catching a ferry to Java.
I guess that depends on why one would visit Bali. Cheap drunk? Stay in the south. Wannabe missy Gilbert? Go to Ubud, then eat and leave.Scuber-dive? Amed is good but make no long term plans on relocation.See Bali? Visiting the west is something different. Seek the road seldom traveled.
