I find it hard to believe a New Zealander would do such a thing. They are usually the most honest and trustworthy people.

It will be all over the news tomorrow morning, Davita. It's been an ongoing saga on Facebook for the past two weeks. This man, allegedly, stole from a few people and beat up a couple of women, quite savagely it seems, from the photos on FB.
He was stopped from boarding at the airport and subsequently, charged with theft. It remains to be seen if he will be charged with the other offences.

I was looking more at the details that he had been living in Aussie for 8 years, I think that must of influenced him as a New Zealander would normally never do this. . .

A New Zealand man could spend the next five years in an Indonesian jail after he was arrested for stealing a surfboard. Forty-year-old Richard James Wackrow, from Wellington, was detained at Denpasar Airport on the island of Bali on Friday. Police allege he had stolen a surfboard from an American tourist and was trying to flee the country.
North Kuta police chief Ronny Riantoko Eppang said Wackrow allegedly stole items belonging to Mary Olejniczak, 43.
"The victim lost a surfboard, a Samsung cellphone and two Rip Curl watches, worth a total of Rp 7.5 million (NZ$770)."
According to the police report, Wackrow – who's been living in Australia for the last eight years – slept over at the victim's house the night before the alleged theft.
Wackrow is refusing to speak with authorities or police until he is given a lawyer. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it has given him consular advice through the embassy in Jakarta.

Not sure if this is the right spot for this but waaay heeey:
Seems that lots of people are getting arrested in Bali just now - more than the usual in my subjective feel. Most of them seem to be doing things that would be good if they were arrested in the west but seem blatantly stupid here.
For instance: the American woman that looks to have murdered her mother and boy friend shouting about sexual abuse in jail and refusing to talk to the local police until a US lawyer is on site. This guy seems to be doing the same.
For me that looks to be "Perry Mason" law but surely not "Made Pasteka" jurisprudence?
From what I've heard if you want to make some police problems here go away then the recommendation should be - go very quietly and keep waving your wallet and no lawyering up - they just raise the final cost.
What do you recommend that someone here in Indo in legal/police problems should do?

Where's Desmond Morris "opposing thumbs are the best that evolution has to offer" at when you want to trade places??

A New Zealander arrested in Bali over the theft of a surfboard is also wanted in relation to an alleged assault in the island earlier this month.
Former Wellington man Richard Wackrow is said to be on hunger strike in Canngu police station, just outside tourist hotspot Kuta after being detained at Denpasar airport on Friday.
Wackrow was accused of stealing a surfboard and other goods worth a total of $776 from a US tourist, the Jakarta Post reported.
He faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.
Bali Tourist Police issued an alert for Wackrow on September 8, posting various photos of him and his alleged victim on its Facebook page.
That woman, Lisa Neumeyer, said she met Wackrow in August and while they got on well initially, the relationship rapidly unravelled.
"It's been a really crazy situation," Ms Neumeyer said.
Homestay operator Esther Gehl said she gave Wackrow eight weeks' free accommodation.
She said Wackrow seemed good with children and her 11 year-old son was devastated to hear Wackrow was in jail.
A Bali-based security specialist said Wackrow's ex-girlfriend hired him to track Wackrow after that relationship turned sour earlier this year.
The security specialist said Wackrow was born in Wellington, and lived in Burleigh Heads, Queensland.
His brother Ben Wackrow told 3News the family was trying to gather funds to hire a lawyer over the alleged theft.
"It wouldn't be unlike him to not be in some sort of, I wouldn't say trouble, but getting up to some sort of mischief."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of Wackrow's arrest.
"The New Zealand embassy in Jakarta is providing consular advice to Mr Wackrow," a spokeswoman said.
Police in Bali could not be reached for comment immediately.
That whole 'WANTED' poster on the FB forum is/was a pile of stinking manure. Wide open to abuse and anyone with a conceived gripe posting any old wank as payback. If you saw the OP the fifty odd posts in the thread would have done the Salem Witch Hunts proud, whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
