Hi there,I am looking around for a good builder or kontractor for my house.Hope i can get some good contacts from those who have built with skilled, reliable kontractors.I'm hoping to hire the main guy from around ubud, or denpasar.Just so that it's easier for meetings & ensuring that the kontractor can be on site more regularly.Thanks.
Mark
There is a firm called Populaire. They used to advertise on the board. I've seen their work in Ubud and Jimbaran and it's very good. You couldn't go wrong talking to them, though they are not likely to be your cheapest option.

Hi Philip,We have contact with a small contractor who built our house in Kerobokan, although it is so difficult to give a recommendation, because often it is the team of workers who do a good job rather than the company. Bali is not like Oz or Europe. However, our Contractor does understand the concept of waterproof membranes (a 'Damp Proof Course' in the UK) which I now know is a concept that few builders understand here in Indonesia, and the importance of good, anti-termite timber. If it helps I can give you his mobile number. He does speak English, and has worked for a number of Europeans here in Bali. Also, we have also discovered that a lot of building workers have difficulty in understanding the standard architectural drawings, so we converted our drawings into 3 dimensional pictures. It made a huge difference to building progress and costs, as they didn't waste time and materials re-doing Work. If you need any help to do that, we would happy to help you. Just ask. Good luck with your venture. There are a number of us who have taken that same plunge, so you can learn from our mistakes (and successes!)Barekarma

Hope I am not breaking any rules of the Forum, but you asked. Our Contractor is called Hendrik (081338553020). He does speak English, but it is not his first language, so be please be clear and precise on what you want. He is based in Kerobokan. If you want to see the work that he has done (which, I feel, is more valuable than seeing photos or an architect's proposed image), you can come down a see our place in Kerobokan. Just send me a reply via this Forum, and then we can go from there...Good luck with the quotes (when we started getting ours, the prices ranged wildly, and often the Contractors did not quote for everything we asked for!)Barekarma

Mark
Yes, I believe they still have ongoing projects in South Bali, including a massive show villa in Jimbaran. Don't know about the Ubud office. They've had only one small construction project there. Their facebook page is also pretty active with recent photos and project updates.

Hi, i'm looking for wood workers who specialises in building roofs. I have been told that the balinese are better at building roofs?I'm open to both balinese or javanese workers, as long as they have a good track record. If you know anyone good, please let me know. Thanks:)
Markit
If you want alang alang I have good people but if you want wood then you would be best getting an architect to plan it and with the amounts go get the wood yourself (best source is in Denpasar at Toko Jati just off the Gatso - contact Mariani on +62 361 740 8330 - Indo only). Building can be done by most Balinese "builders". Just check their previous builds to make sure it's what you want.

@ Mark Lindsay. The Contractor we used is called Hendrik (081 3385 53020), based in Kerobokan. I understanding that he is currently completing some villa projects. On the subject of drawings for the IMB, we almost completed our renovation of the house before the IMB was approved... and the drawings submitted by the land owner was only the same as our place in that they were both single storey and in the same location on the land. The officials were happy. We got the all important metal IMB plaque! Also, I strongly recommend that you convert your drawings in to simple 3-dimensional sketches, as, in my experience, very few building teams know how to read an architectural drawing. We had problems, until we showed the building guys our Sketch-Up images, and then printed off the pictures. Suddenly all made sense to them, and the work galloped ahead in the right direction. We didn't even put all the dimensions on the sketches, but what resulted was exactly like the pictures they saw. We should have started in the that way right from the begining... it would have saved months of wasted work.If you have a problem turning your sketches into Sketch-Up Drawings, please let me know. Hope that helps in the challenges ahead.Barekarma

I have found an Australian builder who is both well priced and does a great job. I spent ages researching and hearing horror stories ( I heard a lot when I used to live here 7 years ago that put me off the idea) but I finally found someone who not only helped with my plans, submissions and build but gave me a quote that he stuck to. If anyone needs his number SMS me 081337427473
