Arrested at just 19-years-old, Bali Nine member, Scott Rush, has announced he plans to marry a London banker he met days before his arrest.
London banker, Nikki Butler, 38, says she met Rush while on holiday in Bali and hung out with him then. The mother of two saw a story on UK television about British grandmother, Lindsay Sandiford, which also mentioned the Bali Nine and she realised it was the boy she had met on holidays and got in touch with him.
“I don’t really see him as a criminal. It’s not like he was a murderer or rapist. He did something really stupid when he was young and he has paid for it.
“It just feels like the right thing,” Ms Butler told the Telegraph. “I don’t want to be with anybody else.”
Rush was moved earlier this year from Kerobokan to Karangasem where he is serving a life sentence. He has appealed twice and narrowly escaped the death penalty.
With a well documented struggle with drugs during his prison sentence, Rush claims the romance has given him a new lease on life and Butler claims she won’t put up with any drugs, “it’s a deal breaker”.
With eight years served already, Rush hopes to plead his case once more for a more lenient sentence. He proposed to Ms Butler, who is currently seeking a divorce from her husband, from behind bars.
“I was meant to meet her,” he said. “I never expected this to happen.”
