Old English saying but true. Any of you out there looking to build or renovate I heartily recommend using brass fixtures instead of the crappy/thin "stainless steel" that is sold everywhere in the building supply shops here. Not only does it look better, with an almost Gothic look, and fit more appropriately with the Balinese building style they also wear much better in the humid/salty climate present on the island. And don't rust! It's bags cheaper and easily cleaned with ketchup (?!? yes, just rub some ketchup on it to restore that lovely deep brown burnished colour). I regularly go to Wijaya Kusuma Brass - these are the bright yellow hole-in-the-wall shops with boards of the fittings in front of the shops - there are 2 between Mas and Ubud and several around Denpasar - for sure one on the Gotso. Don't you just love the way they put stainless steel fittings on aluminium windows and doors and can't understand why they seize up in the Bali climate.Brass was used on ships for a reason and it wasn't so I had something that had to be polished for inspection every week.

Why wouldn't more people use brass if it is so good? Is it more expensive? Higher maintenance?

Not sure why more don't use it - as I said they do have about 4-5 of the little shops around. I would guess that most people (not of a sailing nature) wouldn't know much about brass as it's not prevelant in the west either. It's definitely not the expense and can't be the maintenance either unless the world runs out of ketchup.
