Guys you all seem to forget that this is INDONESIA. If you want security and surety you need to leave these shores far, far behind you. When recently asked about the state of the Indonesian legal system as a whole my lawyer friend said "Indonesia is ALL grey area". Take the advise above, as always, with the understand/hope that you will never be asked by officials about it if you choose to do the deed, but if you do/are then refer to the paragraphs in the law and have your wallet handy.

Good advice...like all things in life it is a balance of risk vv reward. Getting deported and banned from re-entry to even sort out my affairs like selling property in Indonesia would be a risk too far! I guess I'll never be a DJ, or even a washboard player, ever again.:distant: Smoke and Gilbert seem to know a lot about LAW. @ Davita, no I am not a lawyer and I have never spend a night at a Holiday Inn Express...This being said, I do sometimes feel like a genius, but that feeling passes quickly when I realize that I am answering questions asked by people who's IQ must be dangerously low or who's skull is very thick, since I find myself repeating my given answers but using different words, just to get the message across. So "Why my interest in Law?" Well in my case, up to a point, knowing the laws of several countries has made it possible for me to "retire" at a young age.. Knowing the law automatically means also knowing the "grey area's" in laws. Illegal but condoned, legal but with restrictions, you are allowed to sell but not allowed to import/transport, these examples in combination with NL that might ring a bell as to what kind of business I have in NL. Basically knowing the Law can be very profitable. When I bought land here on Bali, I was confronted with the strange Indonesian Law regarding "owning land by a foreigner", so I studied up. The landpurchase lead to immigration-status, so learned about those laws..immigration laws lead to laws about working,laws about marriage..the law about employment lead to laws about taxes etcetc...These and other laws lead me to find out about several "How to's"...all those things put together make me pretty knowledgeable about most things a foreigner would encounter when moving to Bali. @Joe Writeson, The words : "grey area" read "going to cost you money" is certainly a possibility in my line of business, but if encountered not a disaster or is paying 20K whilest making 60K not a good thing? Anyways there are always two ways of looking at an situation, "cup half full and cup half empty". Most of your comments are made with an "cup half empty" attitude and I am a "cup half full" person...I think that is the reason why you and me can only agree to disagree. As for proof to my statement, I suggest picking up a lawbook and do some research yourself. I have been told that writers supposed to be very good in researching stuff

Re ... research I have and did, and there is not one 'law' book available which clarifies anything in plain English. Secondly the Kilimanjaro of Law Books in Bahasa Indonesia are a complete mystery to most Indonesians and as stated previously on many other subjects, if two 'Experts' were to give their personal opinions on a given point of law it would differ by 180 degrees. I asked for proof that a DJ on a 'business visa' could stand behind a set of decks night after night playing music to a floor full of dancers then claim to be a engaging in 'promotional activities' or 'training' and be 100% legal ... that question was not answered ... pass me my half full cup.

A report in today's Jakpost says 20 teachers from Jakarta International School (JIS) will be deported from RI due to immigration violations. Their work-permit states they are middle-school teachers when, in fact, they were employed as kindergarten and elementary school teachers. They hail from USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Taiwan. Maybe not so much of a 'grey area' after all!

Re #45 ... the problem is now that a lot of people will automatically assume they had something to do with the 'other' problems. And regarding the 'grey areas' ... too many people gobbing off as 'experts' when in fact no one can predict how the authorities on the scene of the alleged 'offence' will interpret the matter... there is only ever ONE answer ... have the money ready!

hehehe...If they have a work permit (Imta), and it only says DJ, that could open-up to lots of job interpretations..i.e. Doctor of Justice...notaris. Ditzy Jazzer....sax player. Dotes Jesus...preacher. Denies Jackasses....runs a forum. Door-to-door Jehovah.....gives out pamphlets. Drives Jujitsu....sports wrestler or taxi driver. Dance Jumba....fitness trainer. Anymore?

...wrong..and if you are going to make snide remarks please post them in English. A DJ 'works' behind a set of decks in a public place in plain view night after night... A Writer can write anywhere anytime and usually alone, articles and prose could have been written ten years ago or last week, here or elsewhere, there is no way at all to define 'writer' as a job or employment. Technical Writing is a different scenario and would definitely require legal status as a 'job'. Next pointless comment please?

Seems this happened in Sanur 'coz I didn't hear it in Kerobokan. That isn't the first time Sanur has had that problem...I remember reading that many whooooosh sounds fly across that part of the island and go unnoticed...must be the food, or the beer...or maybe that so laid back lifestyle that makes for hard of hearing. Now I get why those motor bikers have no exhausts muffled...the people are so hard of hearing it tells them when the engine runs!
