Trance music establishments

Though I have sneaking suspicion that Gilbert may be the only person here that might have a clue about what I am on about, just wondering by chance if anyone might know of anywhere in Bali that still plays old school Trance music with any regularity, especially epic trance, anthem trance or goa/psytrance. Think Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Sven Vath or Infected Mushroom et al. Used to be everywhere, once upon a time. It seems to have died a death with the Double Six Club other than a couple of Seminyak gay bars, which provide nice, soft, comfy chairs, but not the atmosphere that most of the discotheques [I]used[/I] to have (like the top floor of old Paddys before it took orbit, sob). Just putting it out there. Any info would be appreciated. The only info I can seem to dig up anywhere is a place called Space Bar in the Gili's, but even this place seems under threat. Cheers

Theres still plenty of International DJ's living in Bali, some are charging the same as locals.. some even cheaper. I think you'll find the music just isn't as popular as it once was.

The whole oldskool trance/techno scene died when club owners started employing local Djs as opposed to bringing in expensive foreigners...I mean after all, they are only spinning discs and anyone can do that can't they? The sight of a local DJ 'miming' to a Dave Clarke CD over two 12 inchers spinning on a set of 'decks' with no stylus just about sums it up, this was followed by an equally inept airing of over an hour of blippy/farty/casio Jakattatechno tripe...which I hate. The scene needs rebuilding and unfortunately it is all Catch 22, big names are needed to attract the dancers, club owners won't pay for big names because of empty dance floors...

How can you charge cheaper than zilch...because plenty of local DJ's used to appear FOC in the mistaken belief it was a stepping stone to stardom... aspirations mostly based on the 'Tonight God is DJ' period when a handful of spinners were making phenomenal sums ... but hundreds, nay thousands more, lied their heads off about their fees... Re the popularity of the music ... aye probably right there as well ...

I'm just going off what quotations the wife's been given, maybe local club DJ's charge less than local wedding DJ's.

These days there is a vast difference between 'Wedding' and 'Club' DJs and their perception of exactly what is their purpose in life ... unfortunately a lot of local DJs seem to think that both gigs can be entertained by playing endless blippy farty loops and hip hop whose 'cool' factor they rate by the amount of profanity used... I certainly would never attempt an Indonesian Wedding in a million years, equally so, I would never expect a local DJ ever to be able to handle an expat function ... with that in mind my quote for DJ/MC services would not be cheap...but I would consider club spots for far less to help a genuine owner trying to get something going...if I believed in them. The local and international DJ's my wife uses for weddings are all Club DJ's here. The local DJ's are previous beat magazine award winners. DJ'ing at a club and a wedding are very similar, at least at the clubs I go to anyway. Get everyone on the dance floor using the genre of music the bride/groom/club want you to play.

I have seen local DJ's physically removed from the decks for refusing to play requests from the bride/groom and continuing with 'club' music when the audience was mainly expats in the 45/60 age group ... and of course everything played at distortion level. Local DJ's do not have the musical knowledge nor history to cater for the older generation... and [I]that's[/I] where the big money is ...

Yea most of the [B]crap[/B] local DJ's don't know a lot of the older music. There are some that do and can cater for all ages. I'm not sure why you think the big money is with the older generation. the younger generation are the people getting married and the ones visiting clubs. I've found most of the older generation prefer live bands.

Sorry, we are discussing different areas, I am taking about expats, often second, third, fourth and more marriages... let's be diplomatic and say 'mature' and invariably from the Oil & Gas industry ... and therefore in the high income brackets ... and usually willing to part with it in copious amounts to ensure a good 'do'..

There is quite big community of trance people in Ubud (obviously). They make private / not so private parties from time to time. I cannot point to exact persons, but you can find them out if you make some research (they are easy to recognize, haha)
