Now there's a novel idea...amazing no-one has thought of this before:highly_amused: Love the comment.... Obtaining a retirement visa to live in Indonesia is relatively easy: "You just have to prove you can support yourself." I'm thinking ...by the time you've upfronted the cost of those villas and maintenance and annual Visa and Merp.... the average 'retired' Joe couldn't afford to support himself.

From my reading on the Aussy work market "the average Joe" is on about $80k to $120k/year so I guess "average" is a flexible term since "average" in the US is on $35k/year with about the same in Europe.

"The average Joe" on $80k to $120k/year! Where the hell did you read that, Markit. If you take out all those working in the mining industry, I think you'll find the average salary is more like $40k to $45/year in Australia, not much more than the US.

IN a first for Bali, a high-powered group of developers is building a gated estate aimed at the over 55s. Former Virgin Entertainment executive Ian Duffell has joined forces with Bali-based Australian property developer Saxon Looker's Sentosa Worldwide Resorts group and Indonesian property company PT Mandiri Aditama Perkasa to develop a 6.5ha site at Umulas near Bali's famous Canggu Club, just past trendy Seminyak. All up, 140 luxury houses will be developed at the Sentosa Residence Umulas complex with fully furnished one-bedroom villas priced from $US199,000 ($288,000), while opulent three-bedroom riverfront villas, replete with private swimming pools, are priced from $US699,000. Two-bedroom premium villas on 282sq m sites are on sale for $US395,000. The villas are being sold with 30-year lease backs, plus 10-year plus 10-year lease options. Basic maintenance services, including a handyman, pool cleaning and garden services, will cost $US100 a week, but for $US200 a week villa owners score a twice-daily villa clean as well as an on-call maid for services such as shopping. For an extra $US75 a week a full-time housemaid or butler service is on offer. "We saw there was an opportunity," Duffell told Weekend A Plus in an exclusive interview. The Full-Time Adult Average Weekly Total Earnings in May 2013 were $1,485.80, a rise of 4.8% from the same time last year.

That's an average yearly salary of around $77K. Quoted from Australian Bureau of Statistics website and this figure includes mining industry salaries, which inflate the figures enormously. 6302.0 - Average Weekly Earnings, Australia, May 2013

Well, that would be true if the average you refer to is a median. But if the average is an arithmetic mean, then the number getting more than average is way less than 50%. Check you Statistics 101. But then you said the "average Joe" was getting whatever - and then you try and defend this by saying that the high income you named is being received by some minority of above average earners. I think you lost me.

I think we can safely stop with your original statement, don't you? Unless you want to get into a pissing contest about mathematics which was not the point of the article or me. My point was that the Aussy median/average wage is considerably higher than that of either the US or European or did I make some glaring error in reading/writing? To extrapolate that, I think that the quoted prices seem initially expensive but if you consider the target market (Oz) then it becomes more reasonable, again, considering the wages paid there. IMHO If this has offended you in some way then so be it (that's nice-speak for tough shit).

The Australian minimum wage is double to triple the amount of the Canadian and USA minimum wage. Plus Australia offers great over-time rates which is almost non-existent in USA and Canada. I've worked in all three countries doing basic jobs, and I've made the most money in Australia, BUT, the cost of living there is crazy high.

I agree with Bakung. The staffing etc is a bit steep. For that they should give the villas away for half price! They are taking a further $5200 or $10,400 USD per annum just for services. Does that cover water, power, etc. too? Oldies might be better off just getting a long term rental on a luxury villa and hire their own staff.

Yep, you are right about the cost of living being "crazy high" in OZ. That just means that at the end of the day, we end up with little in our pockets for luxuries. I own my place here and just the council and water rates are over $2500 AUD a year. These payments are mandatory for every property. What they call the 'minimum wage' is really the top end one can expect to earn in a semi skilled job of any sort. That is 80% of the working population. When the work stops, the money stops too. The dole right now is under $250 per week and probably about 40% of the population (pensioners, unemployed,) only get that. I could live comfortably on 2.5 million rp a week in Bali but it is a joke here.
