I have family/friends visiting over the Christmas break, so trying to get rid of them for a few days...!! Sending them to Gili Air ( Scallywag Resort ) Can anyone please recommend the best form of transport whether its by plane or boat...

Ferry, either from Padang Bai (1.5 hours) or about 1 hour from Amed. Bargain like mad for the ferry as usual price is 500k return but will go for 300k too. Bon Voyage

I know the owner of Scallywags (Trawangan and Air) and when he and his wife go there they use the Bluewater Express from Benoa. I believe Bluewater also offer a pick-up service in the Bali tourist area. There are many other boats leave from Padang Bai as it is closer. Scallywags also offers a helicopter service but it's pricey...still, if you are generous that would be a wonderful present as it includes a trip around the coast via Mt Agung. Air Bali - Bali Helicopter Charter - Official Website The new airport in Lombok is far away from Senggigi..... it is a tortuous journey to get to the ferries to the Gilis. I suggest you pick-up the latest bi-monthly Lombok Guide..it should be available in all Bluebird taxis and many hotels/bars around Bali. If cannot find I have one in front of me so ask questions and I'll try answers.

I am terrified of the open seas...the water between Bali and Lombok is one of the deepest in the world.... I need the biggest boat and a bottle of 'sea sick pills'... Looked into 'The Royal SemayaOne'.....100 max passengers... January monsoon crazy crazy to be on the open sea...!!

Lea, you only have to worry about the first 7 feet of water (unless you are a basketball player). All the rest of the umpteen thousand feet can't hurt you any more than the first 7 feet. :-P

Thanks for posting this link. Bloody scary it is! Was just planning a trip to Lombok and Gili with my wife. Oh yes we changed our plan of taking a fast boat. Who is in a hurry?

Spicy....I have been speaking to the gentleman who was on the same ferry... It was horrifying absolutely shocking.. Dick how will you get to Lombok... Our plans have changed and now looking into the flights into Lombok and then 15 minute ferry to Gili Air...

Oh for fecks sake! Man up there guys. I sit up here and look out on the straight the whole day (Tsunami Eagle Scout brigade) and there are about 20 - 30 ferries going all and every day. On top of that there are tankers waiting or leaving Padang Bai Pertamina terminal and then there are your masses of fisher boats. My point it you would really have to try hard to drown out there as there is that much traffic you could just about walk over. @ Lea...I hear your plight. One of my retirement joys, in the last 20 years, was to captain my own 50ft yacht up and down the coast of Washington to British Columbia to the Alaskan border. This is not open water and fairly well protected, although, at times, it can seem a little rough. I knew my wife didn't like the water, even though she was a career Flight Attendant and spent half her life at 30,000+feet, and practised ditching and dinghy drills. We entertained a couple for a weeks cruising. On one cruise the girls stayed in the dinette whilst we boys helmed from the flybridge. It was fairly calm and then a bit of a wind picked up so the boat pitched and yawed a little. After an hour I noticed the girls were quiet so gave the wheel to my pal and said I'll go check.. On entering the salon there was a smell of alcohol and two giggling girls with perfect manicure/pedicures and cocktail glasses half full..."Hello darling...wassup?" my wife said. "Oh! you didn't notice we've entered rough water?" wifey's reply 'Wassup with a few waves so long as we don't spill our vodka!hahaha" The moral to my story is...if you are scared of water.....drown yourself first in vodka and you won't notice your fear!!!:disgust::biggrin:

Ok markit....I'll try an explanation for non-nautical types but it might be boring. Most motoryachts ie pleasure craft with 2 diesel engines...have 2 steering positions. One is inside the cabin and is normally used so the driver (helmsman) is inside and not affected by any outside weather...and another identical steering on a flybridge, which is on top of the cabin, outside and open. The flybridge helm is favoured when the weather is nice as it offers a much better visual of the scenery and surrounding water. This is particularly beneficial, when cruising the PNW of USA/Canada, as there are many floating logs which escape the lumber catchment areas and float a couple of inches above the water. I hit one once just north of Vancouver and had to limp to a marina as one propellor was seriously damaged. Now if I was really smart I could post a picture...but sadly I'm not.

Thanks for the info about the picture Markit....I tried but it doesn't work! I clicked on your pic, and it opened, then I clicked on the pic the arrow points to follow the instructions "a five year old would know what to do" but the pic just got bigger....adouuhhh! alamat! I think the problem here is it's designed for people with a five year old mentality....I'm 76, and think I know everything, but I'm probably in the dementure phase of life and simply don't know it :ghost: :confused: Just kidding, I got it...thanks for the heads-up.:icon_idea: edit! "dementure' it isn't even a word ....meant dementia. When you make up words..it's the first sign!
