Hi, I have browsed all the associated threads but cannot seem to find an answer. We are moving over to Bali in 3 weeks and I need to arrange health/medical insurance. Where can I get not too expensive cover from? I have received several quotes but all are massive e.g., $3000 USD per year for a couple. From your experience, where do most of you get your cover from and at what costs? I hope that you can help. Thanks :D

Take a look at this thread
https://balipod.com/forum/threads/insurance-hunt.3617/
It seems that you can get 12 months cover from Medibank Private for about AUS$1000 providing that you get it before you leave Australia. I have not done this yet.

http://www.preferential.co.uk about £60 for 2 months renewable online.

You have to be very careful with the travel insurance as the devil is in detail. From the policy wording:
Duration of Cover
All trips must start and end from the United Kingdom (including the Isle of Man and Channel Islands), and the policy must cover the whole duration of the trip, and cannot be effected once travel has commenced. If your insurance is under an Annual Multi-Trip Policy, a maximum duration for any one trip applies and this will be no longer than 93 days on a Classic Policy or 185 days on a Deluxe Policy. (The limit for Winter Sports cover will be shown on your Policy Schedule if the appropriate premium has been paid).
This would not be a true health insurance, just for travelling really. If you are intending to live here it will be expensive... or just stay healthy - 50 million Americans can't be wrong

Hi...have also been searching for a while. Quick question - does one need to be Australian to get the one you mentioned FINIT? Does nationality and location matter in that case or the other suggestions? I'm Canadian (non-resident), living in Japan (permanent residency). Any ideas for my case? Japan's health insurance system is complicated and very expensive, so keeping it while abroad doesn't cover me, nor make sense. I'm thinking of going with some kind of "travel policy", as well??? Thanks in advance....

Hi Sydjapan, If I remember right I think there was a question as to whether the applicant was an Australian resident. Have a look though because I know that you can get the insurance cover without being a member of HBF, my memory it was around 10% more expensive. I searched many covers but this one was the only one I found where you could stay in the one location for as long as one wanted. Sorry, I can't help further.

Hi Guys and thanks for the info. I ended up getting an annual travel insurance policy here in Australia from HBF. For others interested in getting insurance, it is called the Frequent traveller annual policy but be sure to tick that you need cover in one place for over 90 days. The cover is quite comprehensive including air evacuation in the event of sickness etc. I took out a world-wide cover which allows me to remain in one place for the entire year if I want. It cost $548 per person. A word of caution to others looking for insurance is to check that the policy covers you to be in one location for more than 90 days because so made policies do not cover this. In the end, I think the price was very good, less than $1100 a couple, that is less than what we pay in Australia.

The cost of 1 year's travel insurance is a fraction of the cost of expat medical insurance but in the end I was afraid of it. Our situation might be different from yours but we are actually residents in Bali and no longer have a legal Australian address. My fear was that we could be denied insurance coverage because we misled the insurance company. We bit the bullet and got Health Care International worldwide coverage for perhaps $5,500. for two of us. Thankfully no claims so far.
Apparently the main reason the coverage in Bali is so high is because the doctors, hospitals, and patients are abusing the insurance by over-medicating, over-operating, and being too quick to order air evacuations for trivial problems.

Hi all,
I have read all the threads re medical insurance and it seems most of you are using frequent travers insurance, we have used that this year, but thought we should get proper health insurance, however the price is exorbitant especially as we are 60+. even for basic cover we are looking at 3k +:icon_cry:
my question is who is using travel insurance and how long have you used it, also has anyone renewed it in anyway.:icon_biggrin:
I'm heading back to Aus for a quick trip and wondered if i could buy it again for another year, anyone ?
We have HBF frequent travel which allows us to be in one place for more than 90 days cost us $700 and allows for evacuation if needed, we contact SOS with a special number, if we need to use.
Haven't needed it so far (tg):icon_lol:
Thanks in anticpation of all the good info on here

my experience is slightly different>
i have been seriousely sick this april and needed to be evcuated to singapore.
after having been "parked" in prima medika hospital during balinese galungan.....i only got the evacuation so desperately needed because i was still insured by my european evacuation company>
my international insurance( william russel) did not do anything, treatments in hospitals have to be confirmed BEFORE...! and hospitals here in bali don't do anything without having the confirmation( not even a scan needed).
i paid a lot for the international insurance and learned a lot.......next year i will go for one without the paperwork before and with a good and fast customer service. my researches only showed ALLIANZ so far.also in bali there is baliexpat insurance which should be ok.
the rest is wasted money.
apart from that i was more than surprised, that even doctors in expat clinic here have a very limited knowledge about medecine.
i caught two dangerouse viruses and sos international clinic( after several completely wrong diagnoses in other places)diagnosed scrup thypus, and gave me the strongest antibiotics avaiable.:icon_sad:
as ANY docter should know that giving antibiotics for virus patients can be live-threatening( like in my case..,) i will next time( which hopefully never happens) step on the next plane to perth( shortest distance) to get a treatment and never ever check in a balinese hospital again>
kind regards

I Google for scrup thypus, and it suggests I am looking for scrub typhus which is caused by bacteria I think. So I guess I am confused.

THAT'S IT Spicy!!!
One goggle for scrub thypus( sorry for my mistakes, english is not my mother tonque) shows that its caused by bacterias.
My blood did not show ANY bacterial infection but several viral infections, therefore antibiotics are the worst you can give to a patient.especially cirtomax. its lfe threatening.
just amateurs here.
and prima medika did not checked it again, just followed this wrong diagnosis, giving additional antibiotics until i was lying shaking in the bed and could not walk or even lift my head.
and still antibiotics until dokters from the embassy and the evacuation company came to see me at prima medka and ordered immediate evacuation.
i also had several nice exeriences with my blood tests( i had to test every day) as well. Some clinics here let me pay daily here for the test but provided the SAME test for 3 days, all results exactely the same( like Haemoglobin 3.2) etc, which is impossible, all results change withing one day and you never have exactely the same results within a 3 days period.:icon_sad:

Hi all,
Another topic about medical/health insurance. I am wondering if any of you have good or bad experience with IMG insurance - their premiums look reasonable to me in comparison with the others (Allianz etc). I appreciate any comments and advice. Thanks.
Heath
Hi,
I know some thing about IMG insurance, Overall good but the list of practitioners Or professional to be associated is too short than Allianz.
Thanks
