what should I pay per month ?
Minimum salary for non qualified employer in Indonesia is Rp. 450.000
And the maximum is Rp. 600.000
Is there something I should think about when it comes to age, experience etc.

My advice with hiring a pembantu would be
1) Make sure you have a trial period say of a month incase things arent working out. My first one was a nightmare & it is difficult to sack someone without a lot of bad feeling. We were lucky that she decided to leave on her own.
2) Make sure your expectations are clear from the start. Her idea of clean the house may not be quite the same as yours.
I have had several pembantus & now have one who I will happilly keep on as long as she wants to work for us. Even if she marries she can move her husband into her little house. She is only 17 but she has by far the most sense out of all we have had, is hard working, fun to have around & a great cook!

I`m thinking about hiring a maid and have some few questions regarding that.
Her work will be to:
make breakfast and dinner 5 times a week
clean the house once a day
laundary once a week
because I will be living by myself and will not have the need for to much help the maid will not be living in my house!

All other info and experience anyone might have about having a maid I would be thankfull to take part of.
my ex girlfriend had a maid but I think there is a slight difference for a local having a maid then expats having it... or am I wrong?

Also some questions about leasing contract for house/bungalow
My last contract was for one year and the contract was written in a small peace of paper simmilar to a check. On the contract It was written the owner name and my name, the start date and expiredate of the lease and also the amount given for the lease. that was it! shouldn`t it be anymore or is this normal in indonesia. I didn`t have any problem what so ever with the owner but It would be nice to know for future leasing. Is there anywhere on the web where I can find standard contracts for lease and other agreements in Indonesia?
One more question.
If I for example would get a lease on a house for say 3 years. after 1 year I would like to move.I then find someone else to rent the house for the rest of the 2 years remaining on the contract, can I if I have the owner`s permition let other people rent the house from me. and possible make profit? would this be legal?
:?: :)

that better feeling you talk about is important and 250k rupiah seem`s like a good price for that :!:
thank you bert & mimpimanis

I had a "rental contract" by means of a "kwitanti" with materei, but the last ones I did with a notary, just costed between 100 and 250.000 rupiah to have the notary do it. It gave me a better feeling, and you can put in some conditions you feel are important. The last rental contract I had done with a notary and she asked a copy of the certipat from the owner and that it came out that the certipat was at the bank as security for a loan. So if the owner would not pay his monthly dues, he would loose the house, and I would have to go..... We made a section in the contract about this situation, so now the owner has to pay me if I am forced out of house because of this...
A standard rental contract usually says that you are not allowed to re-rent the house during the contract to some one else. You could change this in cooperation with the owner.... He would need to agree on this...

Iris, I seldom disagree with you, but in this case, I know many Balinese that earn less than Rp 450,000 a month, including school teachers. As for a maximum of 600,000, that is something else I haven't heard about. My understanding of what you are referring to is that they are more like guidlines and there is little, or no enforcement of wage "laws" in Indonesia. And that's too bad.
BUT...next time our senior pembantu asks for a raise, (already being paid 600,000 a month) I'm going to show her your post. :D

I know Lombok is different (but why it should be so much so I dont know) but most people I know with a pembantu pay about Rp150,000. Because ours has not only our house to clean but the rental rooms/house & occasionally the kiosk we pay her RP350,000. She is the best paid pembantu I know of & she is delighted with her salary. Her sister asked us to find her a job & we did but when it was for Rp200,000 she was very disappointed & decided not to take it.
I suppose in Bali there are far more opportunities so the pay is higher.

Roy, I know that many Balinese got less than Rp. 450.000 per month. That's really sad 'cause many people didn't follow UMR system (Upah Minimum Regional). I got list from Indonesian Consulate in France, and they said, please follow the UMR system. So, that's why I scripted like that. Imagine now, with Rp. 450.000, rental of "Kost" in Bali, minimum Rp. 100.000, what about food, petrol (getting expensive I heard), etc. Really in the opposite of "pembantu" in France, they got € 1500 while their UMR is € 1200
I think your pembantu will love me

Interesting that this came up just now. We had a woman come in to iron for two hours a day, four days a week. We were paying her Rp.300,000 per month for this, in addition to lunch for her and her child, ojek cost to get to our house from her house. She didn't do the wash or anything other than ironing. Two days ago she demanded Rp.500,000 a month because she said the work was too exhausting. I had a talk with her husband whom I've known for a few years, and he said that it was stress that made her demand more money since he only makes Rp. 500,000 a month working 10 hours a day, six days a week at a local hotel. Anyway, she won't work for less. We do have a maid coming from our neighborhood in Singaraja whom we are paying Rp.600,000 a month, but she lives with us and does all the housework (for a rather large house), keeps an eye on the kids. and helps my wife feed our collection of construction guys who will probably be here forever. My asking around the expat community here is that Rp. 500,000 is what most people are paying their pembantus.
mimpimanis
Gee DrBruce 8 hours of ironing a week thats an awful lot!
We hardly iron anything at all!
But Rp500,000 for 2 hours a day???
Are you going to pay it?
drbruce
Well Mimpi,
I have three girls who change outfits at least three times a day: school uniforms, play clothes I and play clothes II (living in a construction site is fairly muddy). Count my son as twice a day and my wife and I as twice a day and you can see that we pile up a bundle of dirty laundry.
No, we are not paying it. The lady quit much to her husband's disappointment as he thought she had a pretty good deal since they live only a three minute ojek ride away, and she could bring her son with her (he loved being at our house, by the way, as he had all of my kids to play with). Right now the girls and my wife are doing the laundry until our pembantu from Singaraja arrives.
Roy
Hmmm, ironing. We iron everything. Even with a hot water washing machine, there are just too many bacteria and micro organisms in the water that only ironing seems to eradicate.
During my first year in Bali, I had all kinds of annoying skin rashes. Now that our penbantu irons virtually everything, (no starch please), no problems.
But I agree totally. 500,000 Rp a month for two hours of work a day is over the top. Our senior pembantu comes at 6:30 AM every day and leaves about 8 to 9 PM. We pay her Rp 600,000 a month, and she is by far the best paid pembantu in our village.
mimpimanis
Ketut, has handed in her notice :(
Some friends from her village came to visit yesterday & it seems that she wants to start a babi business with them. She has already bought one, which her sisiter is looking after. Also she has a new boyfriend from her village (she went home for a few days for Nyepi) she wants to get married soon  We reminded her that if she marries she is welcome to stay on & her husband can work for us too but she said when she gets married she wants to stay at home - she doent want to work
Lucky that Made's mum has also arrived today so she will be able to help out after Ketut goes. As the choice of a new pembantu has to be down to me when I get back. It will be difficult to find one that I am as happy with as Ketut though, and one that is happy so sleep in a house alone (even though close to or own house, they aren't very keen)
One hope is that her parents wont agree, as the reason they wanted her to come to us was because if she stayed in her village she would be married too young.
