Just over a month ago I finally told my boss I wanted to give him 3 months notice of my intention to retire and he accepted the fact that I should. My last working day is now March 31st and this time there is no turning back. Since I last wrote on this blog I have bought a new house and sold my old one in the UK. A hectic and stressful time for 10 days in January this year but I got the move done. It is a new property and we are the first owners. Now I have already booked our flights to Indonesia in May and plan to stay for 3 months. I am going to decorate my house there and perhaps look for a smaller property in my beloved Tanah Toraja. My plan is to spend up to 6 months a year in Indonesia with 4 months in Sulewesi and 2 months in Bali. I am still aprehensive about giving up a steady income but I feel spending my time with my wife and family at this juncture in my life to be the most important thing.I do not contribute to the forum as much as I used to because in the main it has become a place for mainly repetitive questions. Not that there is anything wrong with that but for me the really interesting discussions that used to occur in the "old Days" are very few and far between.I will therefore be only popping in from time to time rather than be a regular contributure but I wish you all the very best of luck. This forum is still the best of all those out there.

Congratulations jimbo,While I have only recently signed on I have been a regular reader of the forum and noted the number of times you were going to retire at the end of a project only to see you head off on to another and again you are retiring but I note you have a list of your own projects in front of you.In your own way I don't think you will really ever retire.:icon_biggrin:

Congratulations! As the saying goes, no one on their death bed ever wished they spent more time at the office. Even your retirement plan sounds pretty busy to me.

All the best to you and your family (hope the missus doesn't go mad from your permanent presence ha ha ha).

I for one miss the days when Roy used to start interesting discussions, it was better than any soap on TV and Jimbo used to be a lead charactor.Where did all those people go?

Where did all the old Balipod users go?I for one miss the days when Roy used to start interesting discussions, it was better than any soap on TV and Jimbo used to be a lead charactor.Where did all those people go?
Nothing like a bit of nostalgia every now and then. For the record, as accurately as I can make out, Roy joined in Oct 2004, was banned for a while in 2007, came back and got to 4,000 posts in Jul 2008 - then by the end of 2008 was banned again and has not come back. So, over a period of 4 years he was, on average, posting 3 times a day. But, you ask where have all these people gone - which in a way is asking why the nature of the forum has changed since 2004. Partly, the answer is social networking. My Space -- launched in 2003, was big from 2005-2008, and then declined. News Corp bought it in 2005 for $580 million, and sold it in 2011 for $35 million.Facebook --launched for students in 2004, then for all over-13s in 2006. Now 812 million users with 43 million in Indonesia.Twitter -- launched in 2006, 4,000 tweets per day in 2007, now over 250 milliom tweets per daySmartphones - Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, and Google launched Android in 2008. Apple is now selling over 10 million iPhones per month, and the total sales of Android phones is more than that.So are you surprised if the way people interact with balipod has changed in the last 5 years.

21 days to go.I have just sold my furniture and contents in my flat in Saudi. One way ticket home is booked and final salary, allowances and a nice bonus just waiting for the cheque to be signed. I am really looking forward to all the things I want to do but never had time for. It has been suggested to mt that I apply to be a magistrate in the UK. When I think of my mispent youth it brings a wry smile to my face but who knows.I started this blog with a view to writing and that is also something I want to persue even if its just for myself. I also have a library to read and lots of books I have downloaded both visual and audio. Maria also want a new 65 inch TV so I might have to justify the purchse by watching a few programs. I also have 1.5 terrabytes of films and series to watch in Indonesia so no shortage of content. I have also joined several wine clubs and have started my collection of wine to go with my vodaka collection.Getting excited at the thought. I will keep you updated.

Wow Jimbo, if you have a wine collection in Bali, it sure gives me an incentive to keep visiting you.

The "vodaka" may already be kicking in. Jimbo, I lived in Sulawesi for a number of years before moving down to Bali. It can be a bit backward and will test your patience. All the best.

Found it amazing as I was skimming through the forum to see this thread. Well all started as I had said and off I went to mu home in Makassar and true to my word I redecorated my house there. I was heading back to Manchester at the end of July last year and was checking my mail on my ipad in Dubai airport when I saw a mail from my old boss. Wee I read it and it was arequest to come and help him out for 45 days until he could find a replacement.I arrived back in Saudi on September the 1st last year and although I had a three month break back in Indonesia this year I am still here almost a year later. The good news being I am going back into retirement on the 31st August. Ticket and visa already in my hand. I know I know you have heard it all before but I will do it....honest. Nice to see the forum is still going strong. It was always the best.

My next trip is to the UK for Eid starting tomorrow and then back here for the final two weeks or so. I already have a holiday booked in Snowdonia at the beginning of October and then to Malaysia and Indonesia in Feb.
Markit
Jimbo don't, I repeat do not stop working! You are obviously one of those unfortunate people that can not live without and they tend to drop stone cold dead the minute they finally throw off that yoke.
