I entered Indo on a t.o.a visa. Went to Singapore and changed to spouse sponsored sosbud to qualify for kitas and re-entered at Lombok. Immigratio in Mataram wants our U.S. marriage cert recorded at office of records. They won't register it because nothing stating we are of the same religion. They suggested we get permission to marry in Indonesia from U.S. embassy and remarry in Indo. We have been married 8 yrs and have 2 kids. One born in Indonesia and recorded with embassy. Not likely they will grant permission to marry but I will call and ask for advice anyway. Records dept says it's a new law/requirement. Anyone with experience/advice it would be much appreciated.

Did you register your marriage in Indonesia? I believe that if you married overseas to an Indonesian citizen you have a certain amount of time to register your marriage when you return to Indonesia. I doubt very much that your country will allow you to "remarry", unless of course you got a divorce.

yeah,,
if married abroad and there's is no official document stating you two have the same religion, then the catsip can not register your marriage..
if a marriage is not registered at the catsip then imigration can not convert a 'spouse' sponsored sosbud to a KITAS.
Guess you guys didn't report the marriage 8 years ago at the Indonesian Embassy?
If no, and clearly the Indonesian government doesn't recognize your marriage certificate from abroad now, you could just marry her here in Indonesia..
Don't think having been married for 8 years already, the issue of religion matters to one of you, meaning : pick a religion and marry again.
or am I missing something?

You aren't missing anything. I am the one that missed I guess. My wife visited the Indonesian embassy in Los Angeles several times i.e. passports for our 2 kids and renewal of her passport. I would have thought the subject of our marriage would have come up then. We are both of the same religion btw. So...bottom line is...does anyone have a LOGICAL sollution, short of divorce and remarriage?

unfortunately 'things don't just come up' at embassy's...since it's too late, but this is what you should have done "register the wedding at the embassy there"..
since that didn't happen the next best thing is, like I said above...marry her again, for muslim religion go to the nearest KUA for protestant or catholic to the nearest church.
for a catholic wedding you will be asked for your baptist certificate..
no need for divorce, since you are not legally married in Indonesia.

if your registered at the KUA necause of the marriage 8 years ago...then they should have issued you two booklets..one for your wife and one for you, this booklet is proof of marriage..

We married 8 years ago in Germany. When we moved to Bali 6 years ago I also started with Social Visa, sponsored by spouse, without any problems. About 3 years ago we asked for Kitas and the immigration told us to register our wedding also here in Indonesia. So we went to Catatan Sipil Office in Denpasar with the original german wedding document and a translation certified from German Embassy in Jakarta. We got the indonesian wedding certificate without any problems even with different religion (because no religion mentioned in german wedding documents).
So I got my Kitas without problems (and without agent). Also the following two extensions and now we are waiting for Kitap :-)

Funny thing. We are both Muslim. We wanted to migrate to U.S. 8 yrs ago. My U.S. immigration lawyer said if we are already married it is a long process since it requires permenant resident process. Go on a fiance visa and start permenant resident processwhile already in the U.S. My wife's family would not allow her to go without being married first. So we got married in Lombok but said keep it hush hush. Don't tell Jakarta so we can still enter U.S. on a fiance visa. So that may complicate getting married again in Lombok. Perhaps we can try registering our previous Lombok marriage. Or we may try remarrying here in Lombok. I am trying to get through to the U.S. consulate in Bali now to see if they can help. I am registered with the dept of Islam here as Muslim due to our previous Lombok marriage. I'd think that would satisfy them but dept of records wants it on the marriage cert. Thanks for the replies

Aber ja, alles bestens

Like I said, we were told it is a new law. We seem to have gotten past that part though. We had a stamp by Indo embassy in USA on the back of a marriage cert copy we used there. They will accept that. Still woking on other things for the kitas app. Limited funds so no agent.

Kitas app has been accepted and submitted. On it's way to Jakarta. I extended my social visa so it won't expire during the process. Thanks to everyone who helped me with advise etc.
