Can anyone tell me how I make a reasonably large donation to a temple (in order to fulfil a spiritual promise)? I want it to go to the right authorities.

depends on wich temple...there are regency owned temples (for example on menjangan island), or temple for a desa...

I'd ask the village head who to pay as in our village every time the village are renovating the main temples we end up with different committee for different temples, we are currently re-building the Balai Banjar and have a committee for that so paid the committee secretary. They will have an official receipt for the donation, or, if you can wait, go to the Temple when there is a ceremony and put it in the box for donations, will be a big surprise for them but you may not get a receipt if you wanted one.

Thank you - this is to the temple at Candidasa to give thanks for my new grandson :)

congrats with your new grandson :)
sometimes at bigger ceremonies there's a table with the pecalang where one can sign in (sort of guestbook) and one can make a donation right there and then..
in the book goes your name and the amount of money you donate
the pecalang will write you a receipt for your donation, maybe not suitable for tax-deduction,
but I think it will give you some peace of mind that your donation goes where it should. At least there is a record you've visited and donated X amount.

hi keera.
the best way to do donation for the temple is : to the local authorities where the temple located is. there is a balinese calender for the event/ ceremony being held for each temple. and its good for you to join in the ceremony in that temple. and anounce to the local authorities there for your donation. do not give donation to a person. as its abit risky for corruption etc. make sure the communities there knowing that you give a donation for the temple.

Thank you Bali Chef xx Much appreciated advice

Hi Keera, as a member of the Candi Dasa intelligencia (IQ over sandal sizes, please) I would respectfully suggest you make your donation in kind. Money tends to disappear but rice finds its way to the deserving ... usually.
If you have a large amount to give $1000s there are any number of schools here where the kids need pencils, paper, etc and even the occasional computer is welcomed with heart-rending gratitude.
Give lots and gladly but not money.

Markit - also, thank you for your suggestion. Large donation for me isn't anywhere near the $$$s, I'm sad to admit, but I take on board what you say. I do actually have to make a religious rather than secular donation, so is there some way of donating to people THROUGH the temple's auspices? Can you send me any contacts?
