Photography Points of Interest

Good morning all, I am visiting from Melbourne for a week minus wife and kids in late July for a little photography and eating expedition. I take 360° panoramic photographs that allow you to view an entire scene and I am wondering if anyone has some must see places for me to visit and capture. I have a few places in mind but I am open to suggestions and really want to make the most of my time in Bali. I will have a driver so I am prepared to go anywhere. Sea scapes, Temples, Volcano's, local village markets, traditional ceremonial dances and stuff off the beaten track are what I am after. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, Marcus

Can anyone recommend any great (photogenic) water falls around Bali? these are something I would definitely love to capture if possible.

Hi, Nung Nung Falls are less well known than some others but are quite spectacular. From Sangeh go north through Petang to a village of Pelaga. There you will find a sign to Air Terjun on the left but pointing you along a road to the right. It is a short distance to the parking area, then you walk down many steps (over 400 I think). The main falls have a long drop - I think as high as any I have seen in Bali, and usually a large volume of water coming over. I am not sure how you would go getting 360 degree views - but go and have a look There is a description at Nungnung Waterfall, Bali | Adventure Indonesia | Indonesia Beautiful Place, but his map is a bit misleading. Firstly he goes up through Mengwi to Luwus, then takes a connecting road accross to the road from Sangeh to Petang - that connecting road can be a bit hard to find and is currently in poor condition. Then at Pelaga he shows the route as doubling back a bit - but that does not happen. At the top there is a car park area, then a bit further down another area where motorbikes can park. Here there is a warung with cold drinks etc, and they can serve coffee luwak by the cup or sell you 500 gram packs of it. They say their coffee luwak is collected from the wild in that area and will be happy to talk to you about it.

As [B]ronb[/B] said, the small backroad between Luwus and Petang is not in very good condition, but it's rare that is. I love it personally - last time for me was maybe two months ago. Still passable (in a car with big wheels, like an old Feroza) - wouldn't want to try it in a sedan. OK on a motorbike if the rider is confident. There are three or four bad sections, but very short (less than 100 meters). The main route is easy...paved all the way, and no dramas. I don't know those waterfalls myself, even though I've been through those areas hundreds of times. Always something new to learn no matter how long one has been living here. Maybe the 400 steps with a gradient of 1:2 put me off. Next time I'm up that way, I'm going to have a look. Hope there are no villas/eco-resorts taking over. :devilish:

Hi Marcus: I was in Tegallalang just north of Ubud a few weeks back, and really what an extraordinary place for some photography. If you get down into the terraces, you can get some spectacular scenes that no doubt would be fantastic with a 360-degree view. Other massive rice terraces worth seeing are certainly Sayan Ridge to the west of Ubud. I also highly recommend Amed at dawn when you can see the sun rise over the Java Sea and Lombok rear its shadowy head but for a moment before disappearing into the haze. And I think Tanah Lot would be most worthy of a 360-degree view with it's beautiful rock faces and beach beside it. Visit there at low tide though for the best photos and access to the seaside temple. Bali is definitely among the most photogenic places :) As for eating - what do you like to eat?

Hi JohnnyCool and remoteplannet, Thank you very much both of you for your comments. I am very keen to check out the waterfalls that have been recommend. The rice fields in Ubud, Amed and Tanah lot sound exactly what I am after, hopefully I can do them justice. Getting close now, bit excited, especially with the cold weather we are having her n Victoria as usual.
