Does anyone do VPN and RDP remotely from Bali to the US?

Hello Salam kenal! I am new here.... I want the opinion of someone who works remotely by establishing VPN and RDP sessions from Bali to locations in the United States. 1. I want to know what your experiences are? 2. What are your suggestions.... is routing throughput from Bali to the US adequate for such remote computing work? 3. What telecoms provide the best routing throughput from Bali to the US? (this is not the same as asking what Internet speed is possible) Thanks a lot!

Oh, forgive me for the confusion, sometimes I am having problem to articulate my thoughts. Yes, I am still in the US, but when I said "I am new here", I meant I am new "here" to this "Balipod forum". Our family is planning to move to Bali next year. My husband works in a US company and we are trying to figure out if it is possible for him to work remotely with the type of job he is doing or if we have to kiss our dream goodbye... and those questions are my husband's questions for anyone with the same type of work whom already lives in Bali. That's all. I am not sure what you mean by "Is it to buy Amazon titles that are not available to Indonesians. Or what?"

So, if he just wants to be able to connect to a VPN run by his employer, I would not expect any problem other than the general problems with Internet connections from Bali. These general problems are slow-ish connection speeds and occasional loss of service that the "helpdesks" seem unable to fix promptly. Also Internet connections half way round the world have a latency (time delay) of maybe 1/3 second which can mean that some corporate applications that work fine in head office could perform poorly from here. I asked the Amazon question because as more countries (like China, and Egypt during their problems) impose Internet access limits, you can sometimes get around them by connecting to a VPN service in another country.

No problem. I use VPN to a US server all the time. RDP would work the same. You need a very stable and reliable internet connection. There are a few ISPs that can provide that in Bali. There are many professionals that live in Bali and work remotely for Western companies.

That's so good to hear! So,.... 3. What telecoms provide the best routing throughput from Bali to the US? (Can you recommend us the name of the ISPs? We are likely will move to somewhere in or around Ubud). Thanks!

Salak, you get what you pay for. Sure you can get somewhat OK internet below US 50 these days in Bali, but it won't be reliable. What you will probably need is a 100% CIR dedicated connection. It will be something around USD 900 for a 1Mbps link. It sounds expensive, but it will be your business tool to be able to work from Bali. Indosat, Blueline, Telkom, Centrin, and a few other will be able to provide that in Ubud.

Do mind that there is a lot of difference in speed between West and East Coast. There is a (fairly) usable speed from Asia to West Coast (The TPC5 and AAG-cables are landing in LA and SF). If you want to work on a East Coast server it will be a lot slower. Internet connectivity and reliability in Bali has been improved a lot since 2 years. Technical sh*t: You have to understand that even with fiber connections there is quite a bit of latency over long distances. Theoretically a (n ideal) satellite connection over the same distance is slower than a (n ideal) fiber connections. (~5.5 µs/km for fiber, ~3.3 µs/km (x2) for satellite connections. Fiber distance is in general longer than the Satellite distance (as satellite signal goes straight up/down). In Bali there is options to get more dedicated or more fast routing, but this comes at a premium. We have the absolute fastest available internet in our Bali office, if you can give me an ip address of the server which you are working on, I can send you a traceroute. PM me for more information.

Ron, I think he needs more than that. He explained to me in detail but it just went right over my head....:icon_lol:.. I am not a technical person whatsoever. He also understands what and why you were bringing the questioned about Amazon, but he said nope, it's far from that, and he knows exactly what you are talking about but that is not it. I heard a lot of great things about Blueline, but they are quiet expensive and most of the offers are limited hours. The ones that are unlimited are just outrages, I think. With the type of work that my husband is doing, we have to have internet connection 24/7 so we have to really look into something reliable and affordable. I found a company own by PLN (Persero) called ICON+ who gave me a negotiable quote 1:1 Fiber Optic connections, starting from 7juta to 20 juta/month 1 to 4 Mbps up and down. I might take a look into that and maybe do more research on other companies too. They said they can hook it up into the village in or around Ubud or Sibang Kaja (South of Abiansemal, North of Sibang Gede) which might be another area where we want to live. Hi KJans, what is your company ISP and how much is the cost per month?? Where is you office located? I hope your ISP has service around Ubud too? We are hoping to find at least 1 Mbps Up and Down (maybe we need something better than that!?) unlimited with affordable cost. My husband's Corp office is in Dalas Texas. It'd be great if we can find out which of these ISPs that has the best route to Dallas. Yeah, that'd be awesome if you can help us with the traceroute. That's exactly one of the things he needs to get help with, although it needs to be on a certain protocol he said... but it's not a requirement, so this is great! Thanks so much! The big question is what kind of stuff your husband wants to do. We use Biznet and we are located on Sunset Road. If you're in the Seminyak area Biznet would be my absolute preferred choice. Even though it's not announced (yet?) on their website, I do know they have cables in Ubud. Maybe they're not commercializing their public connectivity yet. I can get you in contact with our account manager at Biznet when time is ready. We have servers in the SF Bay area and in Dallas, both on the Hurricane Electric (he.net) network. They are *huge* players, so chances are big your server is also connected to them. There is two things which are important 1) Fast transit to Jakarta Ancol, where all 7 of the submerged cables come to shore in Indonesia 2) Good peering with your destination network So in any way, you need to get your packets to Ancol as quick as possible. Biznet for sure has direct peering with HE West Coast, on the mainland Dallas is part of the HE transit ring. I'll send you a traceroute from our office to our server in Dallas, it will give you a fair idea of what to expect. If you can get the ip of your server, I can generate a more real peering and routing overview through the ICON+, Blueline and Biznet looking glasses. Why I know all this? We recently finished a study on this, we needed to find (affordable) locations outside Indonesia to place our servers in combination with finding the local ISP with the fastest connectivity to them.

We are planning on living in Sibangkaja where the Green School is. I know that Icon+, SCBD, Blueline, CBN.net, Speedytelcom, Global extrim are established in Sibangkaja. Would it be productive for us to call up those providers and have them do traceroute's from Bali as well?
