I am an avid reader and find that if I frequent one shop, my choices are frequently consumed, way too fast. I am staying in Seminyak and prefer, currently, the outlet at Bintang super market mall.

Ganesha in Ubud is the only good 2nd hand book store I have seen in Bali. I remember some places in Bangkok that paid good money for 2nd hand books, the result is that you have a lot of good, new books availble to read, particularly with a focus on Asia. The 2nd hand book stores in Bali that I have seen don't seem to understand this concept and carry a lot of books that aren't worth reading. I can only suggest getting a Kindle or reading books on your computer.

Is there a secret I don't know about?I agree with you about Ganesha. It's a great used book store and if I lived in the south it would be worth an occasional trip to Ubud to load up on books.

I tried to download from the Amazon site, to be told they will not allow it's use in Indonesia. Any other experiences?

Books with END!I have pointed to this post a number of times and probably will again in the future unless Management decides to make it a bit sticky?!Here you can download all the books in the world - Old and NEW!Just scroll down to my lovely baby picture and follow the instructions.https://balipod.com/forum/threads/book-junkie-buying-used-books-in-good-condition.4302/

It's not actually "all the books in the world". I am often hearing of a book that interests me and then check here - very recent books are often not there yet, and Aussie authors are not as likely to be there as US authors. There are quite a few people making these books available, and one using the name of artbatista has 4,200 books in epub format. These are mostly good quality e-books. Other providers have longer lists but the quality of the e-books is more uneven.

Yeah, you are welcome too Ron. Sorry about the Ozzy authors - care to name any that are world renown? That's what I thought...:icon_wink:

Tim Winton????
OK - a good example to try. Tim Winton has published about 9 novels, and on the bookz channel you can find 3. Cloudstreet is available in epub format and is quite readable - although not as well presented as some. Dirt Music is only available as a plain text file and looks pretty rough. However, using the free software Calibre to convert it to epub makes a fairly readable version. Breath is available as a doc (MS Word) file and is poorly formatted. I would guess that for someone fairly familiar with Word, in about 20 minutes you could improve the format by a huge amount - probably a good investment if you are going to then spend some hours reading it. Another approach is just use Word to write an rft file that Calibre can then convert to epub - but the book you get has the paragraphs run together - not very good to read. So probably better to do some editing in Word to get good paragraph formats. So, in summary, this Aussie author was there but only some books, and the quality of the e-books is quite variable.

In Defense of the AussiesHere are a few names of well-known Australian authors in addition to Tim Winton: Peter Carey, Bryce Courtney, Thomas Keneally, Colleen McCullough.Australia has also produced a disproportionately high number of Nobel Prize winners for it's relatively small population of less than 25,000,000. And the same is true for it's medal winning Olympians and actors.

Christ on a Crutch, guys - these are free books - free! Willing to bet that you won't find 3 Tim Winton novels in any Bali book store? And these you can get from the comfort of your own fecking Bale. And then bitch about the formatting...By the way I will try them Ron and get back to you - your last recommendations (Girl with Dragon Tatoo, etc.) were excellent and a great read.:icon_biggrin:Of the massive list of other Oz authors I only recognize McCullough - don't read her (who reads women, other than women?) and didn't realize she was a Rushagger anyway. If I follow this thread much further the Ozzies will have saved humanity, stopped global warming, developed faster than light travel and settled all wars - all before Tuesday!

The PDF is in a fairly large font with longish lines - good for reading on a bigger screen, but would not adapt to smaller screens. The htm version comes with an included doc file for MS Word and so you can adjust the font size and screen width as you like. The author, Gregory David Roberts, was an Australian criminal - and actually wrote much of the book while in jail. Another Aussie criminal, Mark (Chopper) Read, also has a book - Chopper: From the Inside - which is available on bookz.
