pollyanna wroteAs Gil said, why not put in an underground tank? You can easily have more storage capacity. Visually they are hidden. No rust, no towers to maintain, etc.
all these points you and gilbert say are all true , and no one it arguing your points either ......
but ..., your missing the whole point of the tower all together , which is natural " consistant and constant " water pressure via gravity . Pressure that you cant beat , even with an expensive electric driven waterpump ( which are not always problem free ) that needs to turn on and off every time you turn the tap handle .
The tank on a water tower does not need to have a high capacity as you only need enough in it to provide pressure . It not intended as be all end all water storarage supply . Sure if the tank on the tower is big then yes this is surely more convienient as it need topping up less often or is good for a lengthy supply if the town water is turned off occationaly like it is , again the point is all about " consistant and constant " gravity fed water pressure .
Our weak trickle of town water from we sometimes get in the peak of tourist season ( july/aug/sept ) when demands for town water exceed the supply may still be enough to top up the tower tank slowly , but not enough for a decent shower ..., but water pressure comming from the tower surely be will be .
- Alternatively the output from a small cheap pump ( in a well ) thats used maybe every few days just to top up the tank - ( ie; depending on its size ) would also do the job of topping up the tank in a tower ...........,
Also , as far as reliance on a backup generator is concerned ..., not everyone can afford one , nor wants a noisy , smelly generator , and the running costs and maintenance and storage space issues that goes with them .
Also the water tank doesnt always have to be a tower , it can be in your roof , ie; if the stucture is designed to carry the weight , or if you live on a hill /slopping block , then you could have your watertank , be under or above ground on the upside of the hill . Its all about simple consistant gravity fed water pressure .
Towers are not always ugly , not anywhere near as ugly as some of the villas you see that stand out like the proverbial dogs balls amongst the backdrop of greenery or balinese inspired traditional design . Ive seen them with attractive traditional balinese trimmings , or hidden amongst palm trees obsuring their view . Its up to your imagination . I hope this explanes it better .
