Well, you are not being overwhelmed with replies, so I took a lunch time walk up Jalan Sriwedari since I have never been up there.
I did not find Villa Manis even though I went 1.5 Km. So I thought I just missed it I will see it on the way back, but no luck. Tripadvisor pinpoints a location, and I certainly walked past that spot - maybe the sign is very small.
I saw several places, from 1.2 to 1.5 Km up which are impressive and expensive - more than the suggested $80 budget. They are:
* Ubudgreen -
Ubud Green Resort Bali Indonesia - Best discount hotel rates - a guy told me they are only a few months old, have 16 villas, are currently full because of the "promotional" prices - you will see Agoda has them marked down from prices like $547 to $169.
* Luwak Ubud Villas -
Luwak Ubud Villas - they have 3 bedroom villas at $590 and 2 bedroom at $390, and in off peak times (like May) they will let you book a room from a villa which could mean you are sharing the living spaces with the guests in the other bedroom(s). The room rates are from $180 to $225. I stopped for a drink as it was about to rain, and talked with Made who was on duty and with Cok who was a manager I think. He showed me a 3 bedroom villa which was built around a small swimming pool which is separate from the bigger pool near the restaurant. It was truly impressive - but then at that price I guess you would expect something special. There was no-one in this villa, so who knows - in off season you may be able to bargain. They gave me color brochures - but the web-site shows the same photos.
* Villa Gaia -
Bali Villa Gaia - Home which is around $600 per night.
Then I saw a sign which said
House for Rent with Swimming Pool Contact: Nyoman Sandi 081 338 257 623
. Across the ricefields I saw its roof near the river valley - it would be 2 or 3 bedroom, and I think its price would be similar - but could be a bit lower because it seems lacks the Internet marketing.
I saw 2 other properties labelled Taman Amartha and Taman Asri - but cannot find anything on the Internet.
The bottom line is that Jalan Sri Wedari is not a street with low cost homestays. For the 1st Km there is no obvious accommodation, but laundries, motorbike mechanics, dentists, community nurse, artists, etc. Then you get to the area with rice fields and there are new upmarket places. With all this building, I wonder how long the rice fields will survive.
