My name is Sam from the UK.
I have been looking for awhile to come to Bali to study Bahasa and maybe work depending on offers up to when I leave and Visa etc.
I am a pro diver which works well in Bali from what I see but my main goal is learning the lingo after spending 18months working on Bunaken Manado and deciding Indonesia has a future for me over other Asian counties. I look to come mid December or start of January for around 3 months if its only studys and much longer if employed.
I would like to find a place to stay per month while I study with around a budget of 3.5 / 4 million per month in the Denpasar area as this is were the school is located,, see this address and feel free to comment regarding the school >>> ialf.edu.com
If any of you can offer a room or advice on the places to stay I would be grateful, much of my searching on Google comes up with Villas,, I don't need a holiday and could only wish to waste hard earned cash on these things.
Your thoughts on family homestays (helps my learning) and any recomendations/contacts would be a bonus if no such joy is found on per month rentals.
If any of you have a business or friends that cover my skill set in tourism : Customer service, guest relations, management and diving I would be thankful if you viewed or passed on my online CV which im afriad you have to copy and paste :( i cannot add links yet..

Markit you sound like you have spent much time in indonesia,, I did not ask about visas or if it was a good idea to work..
I am well aware of how things work with imagrastion, locals and the visas from experience myself,, hear is a joke for you,, in Manado I got deported with a full work visa.... funny how Imagration love to mess with you, but I still love indonesia.
My post is to meet people and share that I am coming to Bali and hope to get advice and meet new friends, and why not show Im looking for work you never know.
would be grate to hear about any monthly rentals/ contacts you may be aware of near the schools and nice things about Bali to look out for :)

I did learn indonesian at IALF,and was very satisfied with them.The fact that you are locked up in a classroom and the competition with your fellow-students certainly helps.IALF is very professional.Their only drawback for you might be their courses run for a certain number of weeks only,and after that there might be a hiatus until the next one starts.Just enquire there about dates.
As for accomodation,there are plenty of "Kos",places where you can rent a room with varying degrees of comfort in the south-Denpasar area,both near Sanur and IALF on jalan Sesetan.For 2million you should be able to find a rather luxurious,furnished room.When here,check the ads in the Bali Post and ask around.
Ignore posts by people like Markit,he has never had a working visa,you have,so you are more knowledgable than he is about the subject.

Thank you ,,, yes I noticed the dates in January > 2nd to 13th but then I'm stuck, I would like to focus for at least 2 months and have it planned out before I get there.
Did you start as a very beginner? and take the intensive course or the general?

This sounds great,, what does KOS mean? I found Jalan sestan on the Map,, look like a nice location.
Could you point me in the direction of a temp place to stay when I land while I find a nice rental?
Safty and landlords? leaving my stuff at home etc,, all good in Bali?

1. Click the Settings tab in the top right.
2. Scroll, down and on the left side you will see a menu option to "Edit Avatar" under "My Settings"
3. If you have a small image on your computer, you can then click browse and select the file you want to use. Your avatar should be 80 by 80 pixels.
Note that the avatar is displayed on the forum under your name. The profile picture is only displayed when some clicks on your profile.

Yes i will try and find a kos for a fews night when I arrive,, Im looking to grab a motorbike and zoom round to check out places to stay near Denparsar.
Again and contacts or friends that might be able to help out for a few nights would be cool.

I started at the beginners course,even as i knew a lot of words,but could not make a simple sentence.
They will do a placement test to check if you think you have picked up enough to start at a higher level.
For the beginners course the intensive,four hours a day course is ok,after that the two hour a day course would be better if you like to keep time for other things,as you will have to do homework and repeat what you have learned so far.
If you would start the beginners-intensive course at january 2,you could go on with the semi intensive course running januari 24-februari 20,and eventually februari 29-march 30.Each course would be a step higher.The less intensive course would also give you more opportunity to try out the already learned,even if it would be on people at the beach.Most important to start practicing as soon as possible.
A kos or kost,is derived from the dutch in-de kost,wich litterally means a place where you live and get fed.Kos in bali are just a number of rooms,in a specially designed building or villa,that you can rent by the month,or sometimes even weeks.Cheap ones,starting at around 300.000rp per month,have shared bathrooms,but the more expensive ones have furniture,AC,sometimes basic kitchenfacilities and a private bathroom..A kos can be a good place to start practicing your indonesian as well.Most inhabitants will be indonesian.

I arrived on the 27th, met some great people including my landlord who has helped out loads,, found the huge Carefor (supermarket) and got a bike to zoom around on from a trusted source. taken notes on how to deal with being stopped,, thanks for those posts :P
Room for 3.5m in Nakula area. its ok not as clean as I would like but very safe with many checkpoints to get in,, I like that
Joined a great Gym for 550k a month with all the trimmings.
Met a women who will be helping me with Bahasa and I will trade past tense English which is easy enough and my course starts on the 2nd of January with Ialf school
School told me to get a vsa on arrival but I followed the rules and got the correct visa before leaving to save hassle like pre visits. (Social / Culture)
Now for new year,, no idea what to do yet but should be a blast.

How much to those indo language coarses cost ?

Hi :P the courses range from 50.000 per hour for a local and cheaper for a package.
The school general course for 1 month 40 hours is 3-4 million rp depending on the number of students,, there is 4 of us now so 3m for me.
The intense course for 2 weeks was much more 40 hours only with no extra cultural tours was 6m

I have 2 question also for the locals/foreigner people here,,,
1,I have been here 1 month so that leaves me 1 month left on my visa,,
where is the best place to extend,,, i understand it will be per month now for
a maximum of 6 months with the cutural/socail visa i have but where in kuta,denparsar is the best place to go.
2, I really like it here and the school is going great,,, I still have much time free so I am thinking of trying to find work and looking to change my visa,, So can anyone point me to the right places to start looking for jobs as a foreigner,, (tourism, management, diving, service industry etc)

When comparing Immigation Offices I was advised to use Denpasar, rather than Kuta.
A Camalite Nun told me the Kuta Immigation Office gave her a difficult time when her was re-newing a SosBed Visa, but the Denpasar Office was friendly and took time to explain the processes to her.
I can confirm that the Denpasar Immigration Office appears less manic than Kuta, and I have had friendly service at the Denpasar Office... I used my limited Bahasa Indonesia, and the officers smile and reply in English, but they do apprecate someone to at least tries to speak Indonesian. Take SMALL change, because there will be red file covers to buy and photocoping to pay for. It appears to me that it doesn't matter how prepared you are, there seems to be something new to photocopy each time! Ah well.
My advice is to go to Denpasar Office. Accept that the process will take time to be process. Go early in the morning (8.30am). Be patient. Smile. Admire the green plants outside while you are sitting. Relax.
