Hi, where would be a good place to buy homewares, such as bed linen, plates and utensils, pans, and small items of furntiture etc.
Is there an area in Bali you can recommend which has a lot of these kinds of shops? Or any particular shops you could recommend?

Well there are hundreds of places, but if you are more comfortable with a western style department stores then try
* Ace Hardware - 2 Bali stores, one in Kuta, one on the central part of Jl Gatot Subroto, Denpasar
* Mitra 10 - 2 stores in Bali, one in Kuta on the by-pass, one on the western part of Jl Gatot Subroto, Denpasar
* Carrefour - the big store is on Sunset Road, Kuta - currently with earthquake cracks but still operating
All of these have web sites.

Lotte Mart in Sanur (formerly Makro) is also good in Sanur to stock up on bulk items. It also depends on where you are living. In Lovina for example Angsoka sells plates and a variety of kitchen goods for reasonable prices. I am sure there are similar local stores around Bali. I have found that the local can openers are useless and bought an imported one in Ace Hardware which is good.
