Hi guys,
I was searching online and couldn't come up with a definitive answer so since you all are so awesome (see me butter you up there ;)), I figured you guys might know.
I have to spend 2 months in Lombok for uni but also have to manage visa extentions. I will leave my passport with my agent so he can sort that out for me while I am away. Is it ok to travel domestically (flying cos ferries scare the crap outta me) within indonesia without your passport. Will have lots of other photo ID, and photocopies of my passport with me. I read conflicting info online and just wondering if any of you have had any trouble traveling without a passport or kitas with you.

Usually no problem, photocopies seem to be OK. The other document you could get is a letter from you agent saying that she/he is holdiong your passport.

Thanks Ron! Happy to know it shouldn't be to much of a worry. Good idea about the letter from the agent - never woulda thought of that.

I can remember being surprised traveling on a flight to Jakarta last year when no one checked to see my passport.

IMO , better not to carry your orig. passport .. photocopies will work just fine .. traveled around this archipelago quite a bit in the last 15 yrs , never had a problem .. always with photocopies ... your dive cards etc ..that maybe a different story : ) Have a good trip

hehe @ dive cards. They (well one of) are so coming with me as I think my weekends in lombok may involve some me pretending to be a fish situations. Where, unsure yet as it is still in the eleventy billion things to sort out pile.

Wherever you are from, just make sure you have a government issued ID.
I am from the US and never have my passport when traveling to Jakarta(6 times) and they never ask for it - nor do I carry a photocopy of it, but it would be better to do so : )
No problems traveling around Indonesia without it though.

I think by law you are supposed to carry your passport while you are in Indonesia, but no one ever ask for ID. So best to just carry a copy of the photo page & current visa stamp page of your passport.

I travelled to Jogya in June by Garuda and they were happy enough when i showed them my australian drivers licence and so was the hotel. Was in a hurry and left passport at house.

What happens if you need an emergency medivac or other emergency requires you to travel to another country?

I suppose a small time delay, although from what I read evac's aren't instant. Consular services could probably help either locate it at the agent or wherever it is, or do an emergency passport.
