All your questions are answered in the visa section of the forum but in short:
1. No problem in frequent short visit on the Visa on arrival schene. Eacg visit up to one month with extention of a further month.
2. Any longer stays will need a local sponsor for a Sosial Budaya visa. This can be for 2 months with 4 1 month extensions.
Have a look in the Visa section for further information.

You might want to look at getting a 60 day tourist visa if you're staying for more than 2 months, a few people have mentioned on here that immigration are now extending them up to 4 times, unlike a sos bud you don't need a sponsor either so applying for one before you come at your local embassy is simple enough. If you go back to England you'll need to get another one before returning. Apply for them in your own country to, its ALOT easier and cheaper than doing it here. The only thing you might want agent for is the extensions.

hi all
i visited Bali briefly in august and now have plans to come for longer and am totally confused about visas which seems to be a very common problem! id really appreciate some advice please :)
my plans are as follows:
im coming to bali for just 3 days in october, then am wondering if i will get a lot of questions if i come briefly again in november from the immigration officals at the airport? or are several short trips over a few months unimportant to them?
my main plan then is to come in january for 3 months then i will return to england (i am an english national) for 2 weeks then back to bali in may for 6 months or so.
it is not really my intention to work and i can prove that i have sufficient funds to support myself for this length of time.
i have made friends in bali who live in ubud, and are balinese so can one of them sponsor me?
do i get one type of visa for both long trips next year? i dont want to get one type of visa for january and then have problems getting a visa in may!
if i enjoy my time there, it would be my intention to stay in bali long term - so does that make a difference with visa types?
lastly, do i need to start applying for visas before i leave for bali? i will be in australia and new zealand between october and january, with maybe the few short trips to bali in between. or is it normal to arrive on tourist visa and apply for longer visas when i arrive? do you tell the immigration officials this if asked?
last question - i read different things about agencies, good and bad - should i use an agency and which ones are currently the best ones to use?
many thanks for your time guys!
