Just wondering what the second hand car market is like.. Could I expect to get something decent for around $10,000AUD/80 million rupiah? Thanks for any advice
Yes, the upper end of the used car market is good. You will be able to get something decent, but beware there are a lot of wrecks around that can be expensive. So take care and shop around.

So your budget is about half the cost of a lower end new car. Cars hold their value better than in countries like Australia - roughly they lose only 10% per year. So on you budget you would be looking at cars maybe 6 or more years old.But since they hold their value better, buying new cars can make more sense.

I have a Suzuki Katana [Jimmy] that clean and all up together that is reliable if you are interested. It's in the north. New t bars, hand brake, indicators, seat belts, battery. Has mag wheels, nice seats, regularly serviced and tinted windows with AC [stands out from most others of the same make]. Pretty good on bad roads and very cheap to maintain/run. 1st reg Oct 1993, but looks good. I'm off to the UK for 6 months soon and will need to upgrade as I have a baby now and want something I can fit a baby seat in. Will be going down south soon for business.Oh yes, never been stopped by the police in it over the last 2 years. Bonus !

Thanks for the replies. Also wondering if long-term car rental (12 months) is a good option or usually works out too expensive?

I bought a second-hand 1995 Daihatsu Feroza about 16 years ago. I don't remember what the Rupiah was worth then (maybe half of what it is today). At the time, it cost me about Rp 60 juta (maybe AUD 12,000 then). Now, I've driven this box-on-wheels all around Bali maybe a million times. Also all around Java for a couple of years. The engine timing belt broke once (in Java) and I had to hire an empty tourist bus in the middle of the night to tow it to my house in Jogjakarta. Apart from that, that Feroza is amazing (reliability-wise).Of course, I've had to change tyres (normal), etc. I've always had it serviced by official Dahaitsu outlets. The one in Sanur reckons it's one of the best they've driven but they still won't give me a free T-shirt. It's only got a 1600cc motor and is not 4-wd but it gets me just about everywhere. I tried to talk them into buying it from me and putting into their show-room but they lack marketing imagination. After all these years, I could still sell it for about Rp 42 juta (without my sound system). In case I'm inundated with offers...it's not for sale.So - a second-hand "taxi" for Rp 50 juta is a possibility (I wouldn't buy one). You can still pick up VW Safaris in excellent condition for less. Or a second-hand tuk-tuk (three wheeler nightmare thing). Toyota Kijangs have always held their value here - not sure in the future because of the Japanese earthquake/tsunami and availability of spare parts. There are three ways to buy a second-hand car here:1) Spot one being driven with a "Dijual" sign on it ("For Sale") and ring the owner2) Find a place with heaps of second-hand cars for sale and check3) Read the for sale ads in local newspapers - expat rags tend to be "Expat-owned and maintained - must leave Bali soon - all log-books", etc.:icon_biggrin:

Used CarsMatt.. how much are you asking for your suzuki?
Certainly not referring to Matt here, but be careful when reading used car odometers from dealers. I have learned from observation and from others that the odometer readings on many used cars have been spun back. Looking at door handles and clutch and accelerator pedals for wear can be far more revealing than the odometer.Three years ago I went through the same situation and finally gave up on used dealer cars and bought a new Daihatsu. It has been a good decision and has worked out fine despite my reluctance to pay that much. Good Luck!

Market economy:supply and demand I bought a second-hand 1995 Daihatsu Feroza about 16 years ago. I don't remember what the Rupiah was worth then (maybe half of what it is today). At the time, it cost me about Rp 60 juta (maybe AUD 12,000 then).
From wich year is your car?a 1995 model still fetches 55 to 60 juta now.It is not unusual for cars being more expensive now than when they were new,the Karimun is a good example.I have spoken to several people who bought a second hand Karimun and sold it a few years later for more. With the prices that are asked now i think that is not possible any more.@1,2 and 3:Very few cars that are sold by dealers or otherwise have any service record,so you will have to change things like timingbelts etc.to make sure your engine is not damaged by a faulty one.Or go for the option expat car with sevice records and bills, but these cars are most of the time just as overpriced as the rest,if not more.I have learned from observation and from others that the odometer readings on many used cars have been spun back
There is also the problem of cars with odometers going till 99.999km only.So you may encounter a twenty year old Suzuki Van with 10.000km on the odometer of wich the seller seriously claims that is what it has travelled.Add at least 200.000 km. to be on the safe side.

Hi hermitFrom which year is your car? a 1995 model still fetches 55 to 60 juta now.
My Feroza is a 1995 model and still going strong. If I wanted to sell it now (which I don't), and could get Rp 60 juta for it, by today's exchange rate that would be AUD 6,571, roughly half what I paid in the first place. That's not too bad considering I've had it for 16 years! Also, I spent Rp 7 juta last year to repair various dings, etc, and re-painted with real Daihatsu metallic paint (by Daihatsu). My Feroza doesn't have mud-flaps anymore - one of my Balinese dogs ate them. It's also missing a few trims here and there, after I was nearly run off the road by drunken Balinese on motorbikes years ago. I've never bothered to replace them (unnecessary, purely cosmetic).:icon_lol:
