balinews Search and rescue teams in speed boats and helicopters and local fishermen in traditional wooden outriggers are still searching for the passengers missing from a wooden boat that sank on Tuesday night off Nusa Penida. Braving the high waves and powerful winds, they scoured the area around the accident, hoping to save more victims of the tragedy. At least 11 passengers died, another 11 were rescued and 14 are still missing in the accident in the waters near the small islets in southeast Bali. The fatalities were identified as Nyoman Suartika, Wayan Sisil, Wayan Arnaya, Wayan Muji, Kadek Suastika, Nengah Demen, Made Sakti, Wayan Rapi, Wayan Sana, Gde Suradnya and Ketut Malang. Most of the victims were members of an angklung traditional music group from Banjar Sebunibus, Sakti village, Nusa Penida. The xylophone ensembles usually play during the ngaben cremation ritual. The musicians were on their way back to the island after performing in an ngaben ritual cremation and a public event in a nearby island, Nusa Lembongan. The Sri Murah Rejeki boat carrying 33 passengers, three crew and a full set of angklung instruments departed from Jungut Batu village, Nusa Lembongan, at around 11 p.m., heading to Toya Pakeh village in Nusa Penida. The wooden boat, which was equipped with only a single outboard engine, had traveled for about a mile from Jungut Batu when a large wave hit the boat and capsized it. “We got the reports from local people at around 2 a.m., and immediately deployed our personnel,” said Krisna Maharta, an officer with the Denpasar Search and Rescue Team. “We are still searching for the missing passengers with a joint team from the Marine Police, the Navy and local people,” he said. As well as deploying dozens of personnel, the team also used one rescue boat, one sea-raider boat and one helicopter. Boat accident kills 11, 14 missing | The Jakarta Post
