Honda vs yamaha , alternatives and better choices
honda phantom - totally obese bike for the 200cc engine size , and not very manouverable either ..., spare parts are not plentifull and hard to get .... cant see the point , looks cool but performs like sh*t .
honda tiger is better than a phantom ....., but a yamaha scorpio 225cc "KICKS" a tigers ( and the new pulsar 220cc ) arse in every way .
comparing the Yamaha 225cc scorpio, to a Honda 200cc tiger ,
The Yamaha scorpio advantages are ; Its cheaper by about 5 jt , 20kg lighter , 225cc motor as opposed to tigers 200cc , has much more torque and power than a tiger , monoshock , spare parts and servicing are much cheaper , and they are more reliable , and have a tighter turning circle which is better for the traffic congestion (macet) , made in japan .
For the scorpio , you wont get a 6 page glossy brosure like the tiger , nor see it advertised constantly on the media like honda does (honda adds this mass marketing on to the cost of their bikes ) and you may have to do to denpasar to look at a scorpio , or order it and wait a week of 2 while they ship it from jakarta , and its rare you will find a 2nd hand one , as they are reliable workhorses to hang on to .
Apparently hyosungs can be found on sunset road somewhere near carrefour .
If you have the cash to burn , look at (in Bali )
- ROAD BIKES = Kawasaki ninjas 250cc , Honda CBR 250 - similar bikes ..... about 45 jt
- SUPERMOTO and ENDURO = Kawasaki D-Tracker 250 or the KLX 250 - about 65jt ,
then the holy grail for road bikes is ; the new Kawasaki 600cc road bike ( showroon - jl teuku umar barat )
and for the holy grail in trail and supermoto its either ....
Husqvarna ( showroom in bali , bypass north of kuta , near benowa ) , or KTM ( showroom in jakarta )
note , bikes over 250cc attract huge luxury import tax
note again , due to the state of balis roads , a supermoto makes the best sense over a strictly road bike due to a more rigid frame and superior suspension .
ps , luxury aftermaket seats are available for the klx/dtracker 250cc models from corbin , and sargent seats , and aftermarket 3 gallon fuel tanks ..., otherwise there is always the local jok variasi , forget gel pads , the secrets to get the seat firm , but sculpture the shape correctly to support the backside.

Thanks Balidavo.
These days four wheels, is my primary mode of transport as I am usually accompanied by my elderly father, so I'm not after performance. If it was my primary form of transport for around the south of Bali, maneuverability would likely be a key requirement.
The bike is really a bit of an indulgence as these days I don't get much time to myself and when I do, I'm mainly dropping in on friends around Canggu and beyond with only the occasional trip into town or longer ride. Although I do need a second vehicle and would much prefer this to be a bike. I'm used to riding a larger manual bikes and find I miss them whenever I hop on a semi automatic. I'm often renting Tigers, Vixens and the like but they just ain't my cup of tea.
I'm after a cruiser style bike for several reason, with the main two being; I much prefer the lower to the ground riding position & the lower pillion position.
Given my limited budget and the options available here - I've decided to go with a cheapish Phantom or the Steed.
It might not be the most practical choice but hey, what can I say....practicality has never been my strong suit.

Thanks balidavo.
I'm currently negotiating on a Phanotm via the kind assistance of another forum member and am really hoping it all goes well. If it doesn't work out I'll check out a Scorpio.
Good reviews but the pillion seat still looks high (at least in the photos) and that might be a problem.
Cheers

HIGH Bike passenger seats and horses , you need to mount them the same way .
ie; Firstly ; Make sure the rider has the bike/horse steady...,
Secondly ; Put your left leg (or the opposite side of the exhaust pipe ,as its usually hot) ..., onto the left footpeg (or stirrup) ..., then you only have to swing your right leg over the bike (or horse ) a for a short stretch , and not a long difficult one ... easy peasey - hi ho silver away :applause:
LATAH
Ha ha..hi ho Silver away is more apt than you realize except that on a Tiger and perhaps a Scorpio it would be more like Bye Ol' Silver you stay.
My father is 83 and has a bad leg - he can't get up on a Tiger or the like (I've tried). He has no problem on any of my cruiser / chopper style bikes with low seats. I'll have to get rid of the sissy bar on the Phantom as these are a problem for him too.
While he won't be on board on a regular basis anymore, I don't want a bike that precludes him from being able to hop on the back when the need or desire presents.
balidavo
your dads 83 with a bad leg , and still wants to get out and about on the back of a bike in bali ??????
- what a bloody legend , good on him and power to the ol bapak , I home im still like that when im that age :icon_cool:

My new (second hand) bike
A quick update. I am finally the owner (sort of) of a 2008 Honda Phantom....YAY. Thanks to all that provided advice on my motorbike purchase. An extra special thank you to Gilbert for all his extra help!
All good and happy. One little strange thing that my assistant Made, just pointed out. The colour on the STNK says Silver - the bike is black & doesn't look like it has been re-painted. The previous owner said he has owned it since new & all other details match up (I haven't asked him about this yet). Made, seems to think that this can cause a problem. Any thoughts on this?
gilbert de jong
No problemo at all, was my pleasure to help :)
LATAH...in the BPKB it says what color?
but, as long as the nomor mesin and nomor rangka (engine and frame number) match, it should be ok though
by the way..."sort-of" ??
LATAH
Hi Gilbert.
By, 'sort of'....I meant I don't own the bike in name. For now, the bike is still in the previous owner's name but we will change it to Made's name when he has moved (next month).
The book says silver too. Everything else seems to be in order.
Ha ha....I've already dropped the bike but thankfully didn't do any damage to either myself or the bike - unless you count the enormous and very sore bruise I have on my leg. Lost it on gravel with a bald front tyre...needless to say, I've got a new tyre now.

whoops :unconscious:
glad to hear you're ok and the bike too.
don't worry about the stnk/bpkb and the actual color of the bike being different..just enjoy riding it, and I mean RIDING not falling okey:icon_wink:
LATAH
Cheers Gilbert.
I think the fall was good for me, a powerful and timely reminder to be careful! :icon_redface: I've never dropped a bike before...unless you count the time my huge dog heard me coming after six months and overshot his jump at full gallop.

I wouldn't worry about whats on the stnk/bpkb, as long as the engine No & frame No match. I've seen lots of wrong colors, small cars called mini bus.
My friend pick up a honda, it was cheap but cost heaps to get new plate because it had not been rego for 3 years:icon_mrgreen:.
