Hello all,
We are planning our next trip to Bali next year and will be buying a motorbike. I have driven cars in Bali but always feel safer on a motorbike.
When getting the International Driving licence in UK, they said my UK Licence has to be endorsed with motorbike entitlement to ride motorbikes in Bali. I don't have my UK licence stamped for motorbike use except for 50 cc. We want to buy 125cc motorbike and was wondering what we reallly need because the Balinese rental place rents out bikes and cars whether you are fully entitled or not and some places you don't even need a licence. I have never been stopped by the police so I wouldn't know their view on the subject. My wife says don't bother with the IDL and just apply for a Bali licence in Denpasar. Can someone shed some light on how to be properly licenced to ride a 125cc Motorbike in Bali because I've heard so many different conflicting stories. Thanks
Bert Vierstra
You will need an International Motorbike License 50cc+.
I don't think "tourists" can have a motorbike license, but I am not sure. I never bothered to get one, then. (I may be wrong about this..)
Now I have Kitas, and I have an Indonesian License for both Motorbike and Car.
And if all fails, there is always 50.000 rupiah at hand....

Thanks Bert,
That was a quick reply. We went to Bali last year and rented a 125cc moped and had no hassle at the rental shop with an international driving licence which is only endorsed for a car. So was I driving illegally then ?
The rental people don't care along as they are getting their money.
So 50000rp is the going rate these days.

You can get a motorbike driving license special for tourist in Bali. I know this from my cousin. He is a policeman... And ussually, if you have motorbike driving license in Bali, you can drive all kind of motorbike. Ask for more information in the office of Denpasar...

:D Thanks Iris and Bert,
I feel happier going more prepared than I usually do and I can get a motorbike rather than a car. Everywhere is more accessable with a bike and a lot easier driving in Denpasar traffic.
Cheers!

In the police office Bert.... Every police office (Polantas part) will give information about that....
Angie
Yes Stu, Iris is correct. When you hire your bike the guy will take you to the police station to get your tourist licence. you need to take your passport with you. You fill out the application, they take a thumb print and your photograph then about 15 minutes later you get your 30 day tourist licence. I got mine in August and it cost 120,000 rp. Someone over there now has said it now costs 160,000rp., but will save you more than that in fines. The police seem to be blitzing tourists more than ever in the Kuta area at the moment.
harimau
Thats quite expensive for one month (160000rp). I'm going to Bali for a year or so and that adds up to nearly 2 million rupiah. I hope there is a discount for a six monthly sim. I suppose 2 million isn't too bad for peace of mind and I won't need to worry every time I pull up next to a policeman at the traffic lights. Thanks for the info Angie.

My husband seems to think I can get an Indonesian licence paying the same as him. I am not on Kitas like Bert but Social Budaya visa. However I have never bothered as I dont really want to drive my bike out of my own little area of Kuta (Lombok) where I will have no problem with police. I am english too & my licence is not endorsed for a bike. If I get used to seeing all the accidents on the road, maybe one day I will travel further afeild & try to get an Indonesian licence.
A tourist got a dislocated shoulder just up the road from us yesterday. It doesnt matter how careful YOU drive, you have to think of the pther idiots on the road.

Sorry, back again with another question. To the people who have their own transport. Did you pay for insurance or any other requirements needed for owning your own transport. And where are the best places to get insurance in the Denpasar area.
Cheers,
Irislahay
Hi Stu & Ayu,
Yes, I pay insurance for the transport and my self. That's better. Usually, when you buy (credit or cash) the dealer will give you the amount of insurance opening. But if you buy the second hand transport, make your insurance by yourself. This is the insurance office that I use:
Asuransi Wahana Tata
JL. Hayam Wuruk No. 132
Tanjung Bungkak Denpasar
Phone: 224642, 225235
Hope that will help you

Thanks Iris. Quick response. I will check out that place.

Just have a look at this driving style and I don't believe there will be any more complaining about the drving in Bali.

No you are not.
However, you use Paris to make a point?
Tim
Tintin,
Einsteins theory would apply to "driving in Jakarta" as well...........

Driving in Bali can't be all that bad? Ok maybe in some busy parts like Kuta & Denpasar, but it's the same everywhere, there are always bad places to drive! Even in the mostly orderly roads of England, for example I still refuse to drive in London or Birmingham!

RE: DRVING IN BALI
It was a joke Rafael. Get it? :)
First I had to somehow mentioned Bali so that my post could (maybe) pass the forum censorship.
Second, even at the wee hours in the morning, it certainly take a Formula 1 driver, and lots of luck , starting Porte Dauphine and arrive in one piece and no casulaties, 9 minutes later, in front of the Sacre Coeur, in Montmartre.
I drive in Paris all the time and, except when there are traffic jams, I enjoy it very much (and I cuss a lot  ). I also have been driving in Bali for 18 years, mostly my motorcycle, and also enjoy it very much. But maybe I am weird. :?:
As for most of the American drivers, certainly the Boston drivers with whom I am presently having daily encounters, they would not survive the day in Paris.
tintin
My last point about Paris was that I wanted to let some steam off regarding the Boston drivers that I have to face each day. It seems that 9 out of 10 of these drivers seem to hook-up an IV of valium when they get in their cars, and then there is the 10th one, like the one I personally saw backing up on the FREEWAY, because he/she had missed his/her exit
Going back to the video, even as a Paris driver, I could not watch it to the end, and had to stop half way through, when the race car driver went, briefly against traffic, in front of the Opera. I was becoming nauseous, honestly. I went back to it half an hour later and this time watched it to the end. Last week, I just had my 3-month check-up for the heart procedure that you know I underwent at the Cleveland Clinic. This video must have been the last, unofficial, test: my antrial fibrillation did not come back. I will suggest to the good doctor to include this video in his series of tests, from now on.

You're leaving me with baited breath....and your point is......?
