Heya, Just wanting to know for a year how much are you looking at school fees for a 12 year old In Java? A friends family have offered up there place for us to stay for a little while at no cost. Thinking about paying the kids school fees as they refuse to take money for the accomodation

12 y.o. that would mean she/he would still be going to the SD class 6 (elementary school) or starting with SMP (junior highschool)class 1. It also depends on wich school he/she will be visiting, costs per year are different for example a SMP1 and a SMP3. It also depends if the family's kid is 'rich' or 'poor'. Best thing to do is go directly to the school with the parents of the kid, and say what you want to do.goodluck and I admire you're initiative!friendly greetings, gilbert.

the schoolsystem is as many things perculiar, well at least for me it is.depending on the average rating (performance in school) of the kid, he/she can register at a school or not...then there's some kind of ballot based on the result of the kid in the previous class and your either in or not. If not, then the process of registering starts a new at a 'lower'school (lower schools have higher numbers)If you're in then there's the sumbangan (yearly costs) to be paid and have heard prices ranging from 1,5jt upto 10jt, depending on the school one has qualified for. Then every month there's like a contribution of around 30ribu.I try to insert a link so you can see for your self how intense the proces can be....Persyaratan PPDB Tahun Pelajaran 2010/2011hope it helps.

have you been before??
Hi soontobeexpat!Sorry to jump onto the thread, but I've been to Jember before on several occasions. However these have only been day trips to do shopping, administrative stuff and visit family with my wife as she is from and we have a house in Genteng which you will pass thru on your way there from Bali. And I will try to paint a honest picture of the place, not to put you off or anything but just to let you know what it and most places in 'rural' East Java are like. Jember's not a bad place, but not neccesarily a place you would go out of your way to visit either. Its probably one of the grubbier towns in that region (though cleaner than most of Bali, nowdays) and doesn't really have much going for it, that is, is just a town without having anything in particular that stands out as a must see destination. It's very much a part of Indonesia that hasn't been affected by western influences too much and religious belief/influence/lifestyle (ie Islam) very much has a stronghold in this area. If you're a free and easy party type person you'll probably get bored pretty quick in Jember and you'll probably struggle a bit if you can't speak a bit of Indonesian there. Having said that, you'll most certainly get a real good taste of rural Java/Indonesia (or the "real" Java/Indonesia - sorry I gag when I hear the "real" term used, like the "real" Bali, by whoms definition is something real???) and it will be a wonderful destination to practice your Indo language skills. What you will learn from the place is that that the so-easily-downtrodden-in-Bali Javanese people are actually very kind souls that are no different from you and me. And while I said that it's not the place for hard core party people in time you'll most definately make a core of young local friends who will love to share a drink with you or visit a concert with you or hang-out and have a fun time together avoiding the constraints of religious and cultural nonsense and just behaving as harmless kids should. What you get out of the place will be entirely up to you. if you know what I mean. Same as anywhere in Indonesia, keep your guard up a bit and take sob stories with a grain of salt. It ain't nothin' like Bali but then thats not always a bad thing either. Don't hesitate to contact me if you would like any more info on the area. Have fun and stay safe!Regards,Adam
