north bali.....Just a small note to add - I live in west bali, and I can definitely say that everything is cheaper here - and it's all much more trad. bali. There is however almost no tourist trade, so no getting jobs in bars or restaurants, except maybe in hotels (which we do have!) and you have to fit in with the local structure much more - but if it's peace you're after, maybe you could give it a try.As an example, you can rent here for about $50 per month (for a house); my breakfast & midday meals cost me no more than that, cartainly less than $2 per day. It's village life. Really. I love it.

Hey Guy, welcome to the forum. I would love to know more about the west of the island. Drove myself around it once and perhaps due to the season, I found it very dry around the park and Permuteran? What are you doing there? On a budget of $110 a month for house and food it sounds .... basic? But cheap :icon_biggrin:Let us know more about the west.
guy
Basic ..... hmmmmHiya! Actually I got lucky - my house isn't basic at all, justa little run down, but it was standing empty for a year, the owner trying to sell, and I got it more to look after the place. But you can rent a good place for 6 or 7 million per year.Food up here is heap if you don't go into the hotels. In Permuteran it's more westernised (though not very!) and a Indonesian meal in a small warung will cost between 30,000 for nasi Goreng and 80,000 for grilled fish. You won't find pizza or spaghetti!. Roadside warungs are the best - but most are closed in the evening. many are fine during the day - find a muslim one, it will probably be from Java, and absolutely deliciouys - I eat from the same warung 2x a day - for 8 months now. Still not bored with it, it's the best food I ever tasted. I don't eat western food any more - well hardly.Normally up here the dry season is 9 - 10 months no rain. This year, we haven't had a dry season, so the whole area has had fantastic growth (in the national park - the mountains are all national park and they come down to the coast here..) and has stayed lush. Now of course it rains 4 times a week, which is a bit much!!It's real village life here. The people don't know what a macdonalds is, why you should avoid it, or why you would want to go there. They are happy with their lives, and don't yearn after ... well, anything, really. they all have mopeds, mobile phones and television. All they want is to be able to sit around with friends or family and have a nice chat.Ok - I'm single, still perfectly capable of listening to house music and drinking ina bar until 4am - so I'm getting a bit tired of the jungle - but I'm learning to be calm. And I saw 2 whales and 3 basking sharks today. Lovely!
guy
psAbout the people - don't get me wrong, I'm a realist and know that they would love to have more money etc - but they don't get miserable hankering after it, and they are generally happy and glad to have the things that they do have. The children stay child-like, which is nice; I cam here straight from London where they have adult psychoses from 11. Ok they get married & have kids at 16 (or earlier..) but even then they don't get all wound up with their own self-importance and worry about peer-group pressure, fashion, etc. No obesity, no bulemia......

Hi Guy,some very useful information for me here and has me thinking that West Bali may be the next place for me to settle down.I realise you got a particular bargain with your house, but I only have 4 requirements:1. Cheap accommodation2. Near the sea3. Alcohol supply4. Internet accessnot necessarily in that order ;)Regards,LCHiya! West Bali?Hahaha. Nice list. Not in that particular order for sure!! It sounds awesome. I have never lived in Bali, but have stayed there a lot. Relocation is constantly on my mind though!!
Hi,I think it is important to be a bit more specific, because West Bali is a large area. The price ranges seem fairly accurate, but the availability of alcohol varies.I live in Pekutatan so this is my frame of reference. Negara is a half hour away where there is beer, but no arak unless the home made variety which could be liquid suicide.Food and lodging are cheaper depending upon your requirements. But Negara being the regency seat has most all daily needs.Traffic and the hassle of South Bali are far behind as you will find large sparsely populated beaches, but hangout bars are virtually non-existent. Beer can be found most places especially at Indomarts. Feel free to email me for more detailed information:icon_lol:.Mugwump

West Bali AgainHi Peter, does that mean that even USB-3G modems don't work in the west?Rent for that price sounds amazing! Room in local house?
Sorry I omitted computer access. There are internet cafes in Negara, Pekutatan and most places the size of Pekutatan, but the only wi-fi locations are in the more expensive hotels. Otherwise USB -3G modems vary greatly and change. What works one month doesn't the next, and the same can be said for distinct locations. In five years I have had at least five different modems in one location.:icon_lol:Mugwump
