I basically liked nasi goreng which is a fried rice mixed with meat and vegetables and lawar which is a Balinese salad when I visited Bali few year back.

Believe it or not I've spent the last 3 years eating Indonesian and Balinese food and, above the basic meals, have no clue what I've been eating! If you move around the island a lot like I have been I find that all the meals listed may have the same names but can be worlds apart in what they consist of - even in the same warung it's a toss up if you get the same ingredients twice - either they haven't shopped or they've changed chief/cook or they have something in the fridge (one hopes) that must be sold as it is going off:icon_rolleyes:In watching the Balinese with how and what they eat I've found that they seem to go to restaurants and order stuff that isn't even on any menu. They seem to know what's good at what place and then when you see what comes out it's great. Have asked where that is on the menu and you get that lovely Balinese smile (saying "sorry but you should know that isn't on the menu"). Had this great meal of deep fried noodles with some meat and vegetables on top in a red sauce - no clue what it was or if I will ever find it again but it was great. In short still just go into restaurants and point "that one".

I have tried and tasted (Bu oka - ubud (sukling pig)), but not in indonesia, just in indonesian restaurant here in my place, and I wanted to try it when I get there, probably next month, 'cause I really like it. Any suggestion where is the good place to eat the best Bu oka in Bali?

Babi Guling Ibu OkaI have tried and tasted (Bu oka - ubud (sukling pig)), but not in indonesia, just in indonesian restaurant here in my place, and I wanted to try it when I get there, probably next month, 'cause I really like it. Any suggestion where is the good place to eat the best Bu oka in Bali?
Hi Alicia, The restaurant "Ibu Oka Babi Guling' has as far as I know 2 branches. One is on Jalan Raya Mas (2 storey restaurant) and a smaller version is in Ubud at Jalan Suweta. There are many babi guling restaurants or 'warungs' here in Bali. Some say that the most authentic one is at Gianyar (somewhere near the market), which I haven't tried yet. Hope this helps and welcome to Bali.

In my opinion Babi Guling is probably one of the most over rated dishes served on this island. The fat content of many of the pigs is just way too high. However the sight of a pig roasting over a fire is still a wonderful thing. ( I do doubt that many pigs would agree). The guys at Linga Longa Bar in southern Sanur roast one every Sunday.

The pasar in Ginayar has a good babi guling .. sorry to say Bu Oka's quality has gone down as the production levels increased ... was enjoying her food for over 15 years ... Lawar , Tum , bebek or ayam betutu mmm the best !

Babi Guling - the locals fall into a swoon when you mention it and I reckon they would eat it 3 times a day if they could - me I'd rather eat my socks they would be tenderer and probably better tasting. Gotta agree with Noidea it looks great over a fire but they put no spices on it or in it so what you end up with is the driest piece of leather you can get that tastes of nothing. Pity really - funny thing is the locals all love the fat and seem to only eat the meat cause it's there. I keep meaning to have a babi and cook it my way and see what the locals make of that. Maybe fill the insides with some good spiced rice and bananas and pineapple slices.Outside first boiled to tenderize the skin a little and then basted with a good dark beer with some honey in it and about an hour before she's done lashings of garlic in the basting.....Your are all invited! But you gotta bring the beer.:icon_biggrin:
