So its my lovely wife's birthday and from what people tell me ayam goreng mentega outside of Hardy's is not the most romantic place to take her for her special day. Every now and then we head into Lovina for dinner (usually Kakatua) to grab some thing to eat. This time we decide on Mailaku, mainly because it was inviting and it looked like it had a good view from the 3rd floor. So me my wife, her brother and sister get to the top floor, there's a good number of people there, the atmosphere is ok and we could hear the live music playing from Zigiz across the road. Mailaku as far as atmosphere goes is decent enough unfortunately the food and service is not. The waiter was friendly, he took our orders and did what he was suppose to do, the problem started when the garlic bread we wanted came in the form of a 2mm pizza crust. Even though the waiter explained to us before we ordered it that is was indeed Roti and explained to us the size we still ended up with some reject from the Papadum factory. For us this wasn't a big problem, the problem was the managers attitude to my wife when the waiter called him over. After she explained to him what the problem was he bluntly replied "Do you want it or not, there's no point in talking about it all night. This pissed my wife off, all she did was tell him she didn't get what she ordered and the guy came at her with an attitude. She kept her cool though, said no thanks and they took it away. Even though we had decided that we weren't coming back I thought we'd stick around anyway just to see what the food was like, not my best decision ever. 10mins later the food arrived.I don't consider myself a steak expert but I do know what to expect from a Indonesian steak. they can be a little tougher to chew on then what I get back home. What I got tonight was just that and then some, I almost fell asleep chewing on this thing, it also had a funny taste to it and the texture was more like something that was processed. The fries, veges and sauce that came with it were ok but over all it was a let down. Luckily for me my wife does not have a big appetite so by this stage I was eyeing up her Spare Ribs sitting on her plate. They weren't the biggest I've seen and they were a little burnt to say the least but they were a lot more satisfying than the old boot I was chewing on previously. I think if I was forced to eat there again I would have to order the ribs. I also tried my little brother in law's fried chicken which was ruined with some sweet tangy sauce that came with it, none the less he finished it regardless but what do you expect from a 14 year old who eats nothing but IndoMie. The Sister in law ordered a Waffle so she thought, apparently she got Waffle mixed up with Jaffle and ended up with some cheese filled bread of some sort, I never did work out what it was she was eating, all I know was that half of it was left on her plate when we left and she wasn't all that pleased. All in all I would have to say Booo to you Mailaku for being a damper on my wifes birthday, we could have had Ayam Goreng Mentega outside of Hardy and saved Rp150.000, the view may not have been all that but at least the food and service would have been better.

But my husband thinks any time he's eating ayam goreng mentega time very well spent. I'll just have to hope he doesn't find your Hardy's mentega place before my next birthday :icon_e_smile:. It's enough having to sit on the wall beside the footpath outside Hardy's in Gianyar while my grandkids eat the ayam goreng and I listen to the beggars.

Whilst I am sure there are places to get could western food down south personally I would never order western food in Indonesia. It is like going into a chinese restaurant and ordering fish an chips. What you get is not the real deal as they are not used to making such food. Still each to their own

Since I eat mostly Asian food at home, when I go out, I enjoy having a pizza or something. Certainly the western take by restaurants here can get some interesting results, but it's not always bad. I have been to Mailaku a few times and I agree with BKT's review. The views there are quite nice, especially at dusk, but the food is pretty ordinary. The Thai restaurnt, Jasmine Kitchen is quite nice in Lovina. I have found most of the places that cater to locals are generally cheaper and tastier than the ones catering to foreigners, at least in the north of Bali.

Lovina restaurants are hardly the talk of the nation - but we spend many enjoyable nights at the various restaurants here. I am sorry your family did not enjoy Malaiku - but I am a bit sad to see such a large negative review. I have to say we have been to Malaiku a number of times and have been treated well, and the food varies, but can be good. I also tried my little brother in law's fried chicken which was ruined with some sweet tangy sauce that came with it, none the less he finished it regardless but what do you expect from a 14 year old who eats nothing but IndoMie.
Perhaps your reaction is just a response from a western trained palate sampling some local sauces.

I've had decent western food here in Lovina, Kakatua's is a good place to eat, Spice Dive is good, they have a chef who was trained in England and there's two places directly opposite each other down by the beach, I forget the names. I'm not expecting the same standard of western food like I get back home, I just compare it to the other places here that I go to.Also my wife pointed out that its Ayam Goreng Kalisan that I've been addicted to the last few months, I'm sure there's something they put in the sambal that has me hooked

My favourite restaurant in Lovina is Kwizien. Bert first introduced me to this restaurant and in my opinion, both the food and service are fabulous. It's located in Seririt (just past Kalibukbuk) and it's not what you'd call "cheap", but it's great for a special night out.KWIZIEN, Lovina Bali Restaurant

I have been past Kwizien many times, but it somehow slips pass my mind when I am thinking about going out some place for dinner. I will have to give it a try sometime.

Their web-site claims to have a map - but it doesn't work for me.

I went to Kwizien once last year, the food was as nice but on average 15,000RP more expensive for a main than most places, I haven't been back.

In Lovina I would recommend "Sea Breeze" for great atmosphere and food or "Tropis" on the beach front road [next to the other "Tropis on the corner]. Both excellent for that special occasion. 'Kwizin' isn't what it used to be before it changed hands.
