Having lived a long time in Lombok both on Gili Trawangan and mainland Lombok I simply don't understand what justinbali is talking about. Not ones in all the years I lived there did I hear about or see blond women being harrased sexually or otherwise, told to cover up etc etc. The Sasaks are very tolerant towards both tourists and expats. Bules does have to be respectfull of the culture/religion being it in a muslim or hindu community. Must say that I miss the prayer calls from the mosque close to where we lived.Feels safe and secure every time I return and is meet by the prayer calls. The only time I find it overwhelming is during Ramadan when the resitation from the Koran goes on all night long.Now a days all modern commodities are found on Lombok. Being it western food, nice housing,international school and a rather big expat community for those who like to get together.[/QUOTE]The Sasaks burned down a village where Ahmadiyyas were living. In the year 1985 I was threatened by Lombok villagers armed with knives because I was having a picnic on the beach with christian Indonesians during Ramadhan. They told me that everybody has to respect the Ramadhan.I immediately thought that this intolerance would continue. It has. Nowadays Lombok moslims are almost as fanatic as the Aceh religious police.

The only "large sword" seen around this area is the one my staff always mention and giggle about when I'm running around in my swimsuit. The only person it's ever gotten into trouble was me but I guess that's where the "idiot" comes into it?

Arrived in Kuta late... Went to Ubud, surprised Brian at Nuries passed :(.... ( well not really, too much beverage) saw Roy for awhile, hes doing fine, house looks great, kids growing up, I decided to hang in Lovina (quiet) for awhile,, May head to Gilli in a week , awesome water, no traffic,,, hmm,, sounds like my kind of place..

I have lived in Kuta Lombok for 1 year now. Visiting for 10 years. There's a lot of "I heard this" and "all blonde women that". There are security concerns sure. More so than Bali? I don't know. I don't live there. With a few simple common sense precautions it is a pretty safe place. I have a tourist related business but also like the slow lifestyle Kuta Lombok offers and attracts many of it's visitors. Many people end up staying much longer than planned. On one hand I hope the "Image" Lombok has developed will help keep tourism and development in check. Many of the Sasak people are intent on maintaining their culture/religion and noise from mosques can br bothersome to some. To others it adds ambiance. I wasn't around Kuta in 1985 but it wouldn't surprise me if someone were asked to respect fasting during Ramadan. Probable wouldn't happen now but if asked I would suggest eating in private out of respect. Respect. I was surfing at Mawi and western lady was sunbathing topless. There were a dozen or so locals selling similar to Belangan Bali 15 yrs ago. They were aware of her and appeared a bit offended but said nothing. I went nicely to her and explained the religion and culture. She apologized up and down and put her top on. Not sensational so it's not talked about. My 2 cents or a bit more. But at least it's first hand.

I run a tourist business and pretty much all of our female guests wear bikinis rather than once piece swimsuits and none have ever been told to cover up.As for being asked not to eat in public during Ramadan - I would have thought that was common sense and that your Christian Indonesian friends would have known that. Certainly the Hindu population here do. It is fine to eat in tourist restaurants, in your hotel but not considered okay to eat in public. This relates not just to Lombok but any Muslim island. This is usually covered in guide books etc (Well it was back when I was travelling).

So whats the surf like on Lombok for kids to learn ?Where is the best spot similar to say Canggu ?And...surf teacher, what are they like and how much they charge over there ?We have a great one on Canggu, not all same same...many that don't care so much as long as the cash rolls in.

Hi Markit, no my friend mentioned the forum on her FB which made me pop back in for a look and saw this old thread. I see many of the same names are still here.Samsiam - I don't know Canggu surf. Here most beginners go to Gerupuk - you go out in a boat and there are a few breaks to choose from. However for kids I would suggest going to Selong Belanak about 20km from Kuta. It is a beach break and short paddle. It is a beautiful wide long white sand beach so worth a visit even if not surfing. Surf lessons are between Rp250,000 - 350,000 depending on the surf school. Advertised as 2 hours but you generally get a bit longer.
