Bali to Timor.

Or more exactly, Indonesia to East Timor. Any one had any experience of driving [Island hopping] through Indonesia? I have a friend who is trying to organize a road/ferry trip from Thailand to Australia. I hope to be co driving some of the route. The question I need to answer is; how does one get from Indonesia/West Timor, into East Timor? Anyone had any experience of this? Any idea what permits would be needed to take a vehicle across? What about the best route to Timor? Any information or experiences please, desperate for facts.

oyeah...I forgot to mention, I haven't heard of vehicles crossing from west to east or from east to west for that matter...tour agencies also do the drop-off this side and pickup other side, don't know why though, maybe alot of hassle or just plain not allowed to.. at border crossing, you will go through police, immigration, quarantine, military and custom checks in the correct order (for Indonesia) and then walk 300 metres to East Timor where you will go through security and then immigration (USD30 for visa) checks. On return, the Indonesia immigration is very helpful, but they charge everyone USD1 for their own pocket. (copied from virtual tourist) goodluck :)

[b]Kupang to Dili[/b] My friends who live in Dili drove once from Dili to Indonesia, so this is possible. You have to islands hopping through eastern Indonesia to Kupang. The drive from Kupang to Dili is around 8 hours, and the road is not really good but the view is good from Dili to Atambua. You can get 30 days visa at the border, but better check with Timor Leste embassy in Jakarta. When my friend drove from Dili to Indonesia, she get some paperwork for the car at Indo embassy in Dili.
