Hello all, I was wondering what you would expect to pay for a half-decent motorbike. Not a big american style bike, just the normal local version( honda X etc.) and I have heard that a new one is about the same as a second-hand one. I would prefer a cheaper second-hand motorbike. What is the average price in Bali. I have heard that second-hand bikes are not too much cheaper than new ones as the owners are trying to recoup the costs of interest on loans.
Cheers,
Bevan

You would be better of purchasing a new one i.e tiger or a ninja 250. U can go the mio at around 11 million on the road, rego, warranty etc. Be careful with second hand as you really aint sure if it was a rental mule:icon_exclaim:

Just buy a new bike, honda is good for resale. Cheap for parts & service & remember you cannot go fast on Bali roads so nothing to big.:icon_mrgreen:

if you want the roads to open up for you... buy big! If I ride my Harley the roads are like mozes parting the red sea, same goes for when I drive my Hardtop...somehow it demands or gets respect from other roadusers :icon_rolleyes: , or maybe they are just scared for the guy in/on it, hahaha. just joking fred.. I am totally not a scary guy :icon_biggrin:

You can get a recent, used, Tiger for around 15 juta, excellent all-roads machine, not too big, but not small either.

I am definately with Fred2. Not wanting to go fast and be king of the road. I'll leave that up to Moses (Gilbert de Jong)
so a new supra x for example how much???
I've visited the website recommended by Moses and they're excellent,(Thanks) there are supra x's there for 7.5 mill. couple of years old, look ok
what do the expats think
and what about change of ownership, registration, insurance etc. is it a hassle, expensive??
I plan in getting my Indo license, I did last time easy.

you're welcome bevan..
change of ownership is possible..i.e you can't have the bike registered on your own name, unless you have a KITAS. But what you could do is change the name of ownership using an indonesian/Balinese who's close in your proximity. There's a fee for that at the SAMSAT, where you would have the bring the BPKB and the STNK.
Every year there's taxes to be paid (also at the SAMSAT) and you get a stamp on the STNK, to do this you need a copy of the KTP from the registered owner. hence someone close to you :)
Insurance is possible, but hardly worth the trouble imho.
Don't buy a bike because it looks ok...most common problems with the couple of years old bikes, worn gaskets (leaky),brakelines (stretched to the point of snapping),brakedisc (getting very thin) or the rearbrake canvas is almost done. other possibilities not visible, cilinderhead/retainerspring damaged.
all not expensive to fix, just F* up if you just bought a bike and it's stops working properly.
but like I said before, if you buy new...you get warranty, none of the above problems could arise. Using a Balinese friend to buy the bike using the downpayment and monthly payments..then the bike is automatically insured.
Whatever you do make sure that both STNK and the BPKB will end up in your possesion.

thanks Gilbert
I will have a kitas (Visa?) for indo so putting in my name not a prob. I thought as much about insurance.
What about change of ownership. do you need to have the bike checked by mechanic, and registration? how much about for all of this stufff??
Cheers

either a retirement kitas (55 y.o) or a kitas with working license, then you can have the bike registered on to your own name. Not with a touristvisa or sosbudvisa.
To do this you would need the owner of the bike you want to buy, to come with you to the SAMSAT (tax/registration office) bringing the BPKB (that's the ownersbook) and the STNK (tax registration). They will change/add your name into the BPKB with a dated stamp. They also will issue a new STNK in your name. Sometimes they would verify if the framenumber and enginenumber is actually the same as on the paperwork...alot of engineswapping with those little bikes. Ofcourse you're a serious buyer and have already checked the numbers yourself and numbers are the same in both BPKB, STNK and the machine itself :icon_wink:
The price for all this is dependable on the 'new' price of the bike in question, this 'price is on the original invoice inside the BPKB. so the older the bike the cheaper it's gets...yearly taxes too.
So basically change of ownership and registration goes hand in hand...
As for the mechanic...alot you can check yourself breakpads/disc visual inspect and for the cable feel the tension on the handle and/or footbrake..look where the cable connects to actual brake, you can see if it's corroded or wires coming apart. if the engine/cilinder (where the exhaust connects) is oily/blackish that's a good indicator that the gaskets/seals are worn.
all in all to repair anything on a for example a supra X...will not suck you dry as in broke..parts are easily available and cheap like fred2 said.
If you're upnorth, it would be no problem to tag along and help you check your maybe future bike...ofcourse at no costs :icon_lol:

I would buy a new one, they don't cost that much more and they hold there value, much like everything else in Indonesia

what makes of new bike are available in Indonesia
I'd like to buy a new bike soon too. I don't like Tigers. Does anyone know of any cruiser style bikes available (except Harley)? Anyone ever seen a Hyosung in Indonesia?
gilbert de jong
@ LATAH...if you mean that chinese made 250cc look alike HD they are available...
but it's probably the only make that actually loses value (alot) within the first two years...after the third year they don't lose that much in value since it's broken down gathering rust :icon_wink:...parts available-none, aftersales service-none.
You could check
Bursa Moge - Sarana Jual Beli Para MOGE Mania
for some other cruiserstyle bikes, all kind of bikes on there..from a 400cc yamaha dragster to a 1500cc honda goldwing
gilbert de jong
whoopss...I'm sorry, got my makes mixed up..I actually meant the Ruby Kaiser, instead of the hyosung..
will keep an eye out for you, and if I hear anything about a hyosung I will let you know :)

Thanks Gilbert, yeah I did mean the Hyosung HD wanna be, but thought they were made in Korea.
I know nothing about bikes but bought a cheap second hand Hyosung in Cambodia about six years ago...I just wanted a cheap ride. Never had a problem with it and liked it so much that I bought a similar second hand Hyosung in Australia. I'm not in Aus much and again just wanted a cheap ride when I'm there. That was about four years ago and again, I've never had a single problem with it. Both bikes are ridden constantly by friends in both countries when I'm not there. Both do get a bit a bit of surface rust but they are both parked uncovered by the sea. Funny thing is that a few friends in Cambo have Honda Rebels and Nighthawks that are constantly in the shop...while my old Hyosung just keeps rolling along.
I'm not an enthusiast and don't know diddley squat about bikes...I just want cheap ride and feel comfortable on a cruiser. Given I've never had a problem with either of the other two Hyosungs, I'd be happy to pick one up here...if anyone knows where I might be able to find a cheap one.
Thanks for the link - I'll keep checking it.

I recommend check chain and sprockets, swing arm & wheel bearings as the last few bikes I have hired needed these replaced. If a bike bike is still under hire purchase it generally has to have its services so that is a good but new is best.
