I am coming to Bali starting in the fall for a 3 to 6 month stay. I have heard people mention that there are plenty of accommodations on Poppies I or II. Does anyone have any direct knowledge of any of these places? Its all fine and well to try a few out, but I'm hoping the experiences of others can make my choice easier. Are any better for long term stays? Some have AC, some don't. Is it necessary? Seems like it would be :)I am not looking for anything fancy, just a bed in a comfy and sanitary place where I can get the most for my money. I will be spending most of my time out and about anyway. To be within walking distance of the beach is important to me. Thanks!

Yes, plenty of accommodation available, but not really great value IMO. It's busy and noisy and I think after a few days you will have had enough. If you are going to stay here for that long, you might want to look for something else. Someone here on the forum, might be looking to rent out a spare room for example.

OK, I can remember some names. In Poppies 1, Kedin Inn is well known, has been there for years, is often pretty full, but give it a try. Some info hereAccommodation on Poppies Lane I Kuta Bali | Bali BlogNearby to it are others, not quite so famous, but offering similar deals. In Poppies 2, there is Tunjung Bali, see hereTunjung Bali Inn - Reviews and Cheap Rates - TravBuddyand nearby to it there are other similar places - Bali Sandat 2 is just behind it and very similar. These places are offering low prices, and I would not expect much discount for longer-term stays - but you can ask. For me, fan rooms are OK, and air-con is not really needed.I have not found any of these places to be noisy, and mostly the rooms are large and clean. Both Poppies Lanes are congenial places to stay with plenty of cheaper cafes, bars and convenience stores. If you have a car - parking may be a problem at some of them - but for motor-bikes, no problem.

I will probably stay there as long as needed until I can find something longer term. Are there any good alternatives to this for 3-6 month stays? In Kuta, near the beach, that is. While renting a room in someone's home is an option, I prefer more privacy.

There are some more places mentioned in this article on Kuta. Many places are found by word of mouth, you could even try writing a post in the classifieds section of this site. There is a forum member who has a kost in Denpasar which you could try.

I can't believe how cheap it can be to stay in Bali. I have been in Asia for years and I don't think there is a better value anywhere. I figure I can pick one from the list so far and if I don't like it, keep moving about until I find one I do like.If some very eager person with experience in Bali would do a post about some of the terms regarding housing, it would help a guy like me a lot. I have searched for the meanings of words like kost and kosan...now I see kost kosan....I really have no clue what these mean! This is a great forum-you are all so helpful!

I would suggest you book a hotel for a few days and then have a look around at your options for a longer stay. Negotiating face to face on a long term stay once you have seen something suitable should also get you a better price.
