So I like Balinese/Indonesian food as much as the next guy but it doesent take long for me to start craving a taste of home. But western ingredients can be hard to come by.
What western food do you all make with the ingredients available in Bali??
My wife and I make sandwiches! She has grown to love them but they are bit weird, fried egg, mustard, swiss cheese, lettice and bacon or this weird chicken patty that needs to be fried, looks a bit like baloney, the meat cheese and mustard from ABD foodmart in Singaraja.
Yuli also makes like a french fry type thing, probably not too healthy but after nothing but martobak, bakso ayam, ayam goreng and nasih goreng oh and my favorite cap cai! i am ready for something a bit easier on my stomach.
What do you make??

What a great topic, hopefully recipes galore will flood in!!!!!
I have an italian electric pizza oven, which i brought over from australia. So lots of homemade pizza.
Lasagna, and rigatoni bake, italian baked potatoes....using those delicious small potatoes found here, peeled, one can of crushed tomatoes, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano and good quality olive oil, toss all together coating the potatoes, cook slowly in an oven for approx 1-2 hrs turning frequently, the tomatoes cook down into the spuds, which go crispy and very yummy, I serve with baked chicken pieces coated in a spice mixture I found in bintang, bit like kentucky coating but much nicer and a green salad picked from my garden........
I find most of the ingredients needed for western food can be found here, not like it was 25 yrs ago....makro, bali deli, ubud bintang and delta, also pizza bagus has a small deli which has great cheeses and meats... I also brought with me a sandwich press, pasta maker and food processor..
Love Italian Food!!!!!!!! obviously :icon_razz:

Ok one of my favorite subjects so here goes:
Balinese pork is wonderful -
1) makes great wiener schnitzel, just use the excellent tempura mix for breadcrumbs
2) makes great goulash using the paprika available everywhere
3) the bacon from Hardys is great too - even gets crispy and tastes wonderful, much better than the shite available in most western countries since they've all started putting liters of water in the meat to maximize profits and poison the customer.
Beef: local is just OK - fairly strongly flavored and some pieces are better than others (duh!) Ranges from butter to shoe leather in the same piece:icon_wink:
1) to make spagbol I used the pieces of beef and chopped them into hamburger myself as the hamburger you can buy is fairly poisonous and may have been sitting around a while so be warned - make it yourself. Using all local spices and fresh tomatoes cooked for 2 hours and you have a pretty good example - Parmesan costs a fortune but lasts a long time.
2) Filet steak is pretty good but is best with lots of garlic and other spices, yum.
Chicken: All are good if found fresh and eaten the same day - do not keep in the fridge. For some reason I've found that food in Bali does not keep at all - even in the fridge but especially chicken, after 2 days in the fridge it is only good for the dogs:icon_cry:
1) The scrawny little chickens that have been running around in the compound for the last year look like they have been in training running through starving villages but when you can get one (35 - 40,000 each!) they make wonderful soups - more flavor than any 10 factory birds. You finally realize what you have been missing your whole life! Ahhh, so that's what chicken tastes like!
2) the factory birds make a great fried chicken ala KFC or just flipped in flour and shallow fried for an hour or so, the corn on the cob offered everywhere is a real treat together.
More later - must go eat or drown in my own juices:icon_e_smile:

Is meat expensive? For the locals, yes, for Bule, no.
Chicken breast 20/30 k /kilo
Why will things change if you move there? Do you intend to eat all the chicken breasts?

I also enjoy Indonesian & Balinese food but I do crave western food sometimes. Especially Kalamata olives and haloumi cheese (haven't found either of these so far), pickled artichokes & gherkins, goose-liver pate, Italian salami, sun-dried tomatoes, camembert and pita bread (all available at Carrefour or Bali Deli)
Also Italian pesto with fettuccini. My favourite Barilla brand is available at Carrefour.
Oh, my mouth is watering! :icon_cry:

Carbonara - The Deli at Pizza Bagus sells great Pancetta.
Olive (canned ones - pitted, quite reasonable at Lotte), whole chicken, small potatoes, lots of garlic, shallots, thyme, sage, lemon, a bit of white wine (hatten is okay) - all cooked in the oven.
Pesto - basil is cheap, and I always ask friends to bring pine nuts in their luggage.
Fish - the frozen dory at Lotte is great - no bones and not fishy at all. Baked it wrapped in bacon and rosemary.
Meat balls - Ikea style - minced meat at Carrefour is fine.
Ceasar salad - although romaince lettuce is pricey, but it's good quality. Put some leftover grilled chicken on top, then add toasted leftover bread (spread with garlic butter/oil)
Turkey drumsticks - baked in oven, with potatoes wedges.
I can go on and on... anyone hungry already :icon_razz:

Matsaleh, I can usually get haloumi at our grocery stores in Ubud. Just bought some yesterday at Delta Dewata. It isn't always there but often enough for me to have it when I need it.

Hi Pollyanna and thanks. Do they have FRESH kalamata olives? I don't like the bottled ones.
I'll check again for the haloumi cheese.

Haha, no
My family likes chicken more than red meat and I read somewhere the meat isnt that great.
But i must say my younger daughter will have to change a lot of her eating ways if we move, she is mega fussy!

When we first came to Bali over 25 years ago, my youngest daughter was the same. I brought a large box of baked beans and canned spaghetti, she survived. :icon_rolleyes:

Here in Saudi those are available but only beef bacon. Prok bacom and sausages are the only things I crave. Happy with Indonesian food 99% of the time.
