detergent and salt for dishwasher

Hi, I brought my dishwasher to Bali and was only able to find the detergent brand Cascade at Ace. Does any of you know where else I can buy other brands such as Somat or the salt to soften the water? Thanks as always for your help.

I would love to know if dishwasher detergent is available anywhere around Ubud or Sanur. I've also found a homemade dishwater detergent using Borax and baking soda. I know I can get baking soda but what about Borax? Is it available under a different name?

I have a great dishwasher. Costs very little to run, only uses a minimal amount of dish washing liquid and water. Plus she helps around the garden!

no.idea, don't rub it in. I imagine you have a number of dishwashers like that but I'm still limited to the machine option and would love to have some detergent. And its time for me to go out and water my own garden too. Not even a machine for that. But, wow, you should see those tomat plants.

Borax is called [B]borak[/B] or [B]bubuk sodium borak[/B] in Indonesian. Any major [U]chemical supplier[/U] should have it. I go to one called Brataco in Jl Gatot Subroto (the western end). Sorry, I don't have the exact address but "Gatsu", the short name for that street/road is famous for its ridiculous numbering "system". Brataco is sometimes called Bratachem. It's not the only chemical supplier but one of the best. You [I]could[/I] try the latest telephone book, if you've got one, for the others.

Hi Polly, unfortunately, you can't get dishwasher detergent/liquid in ubud and sanur area. So, the nearest would be Ace in Denpasar. Call first, because they don't always have in on stock. I have been using cascade now for a bit more than 1 year, and knock wood - it's fine, even if I don't use the salt (because you can't get it in Bali). Try to get the liquid cascade, the powder is a bit tedious, it tends to stick together because of the humidity. As for borax, sorry, I don't know the Indonesian word for it. Good luck and do share the 'recipe' once you've managed to make your own detergent. At one time, I was thinking of trying it out - but wasn't able to find some of the ingredients - such as borax:)

Borax must be available here because it's often added to Bakso. See this article from Wiki under "Health Issues": Bakso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I also found a post in "Budget101" blog: Borax soap pros&cons

01/06/2009: CN from Albuquerque, NM replies: "This is for C.D. in Indonesia. Silversmiths in Bali use pure Borax crystals for flux when they solder. It is usually in a crystalline form, sometimes in powder. You can buy it inexpensively at a jeweler supply store in Celuk in Bali, or Kota Gede in Yogyakarta. I don't know Jakarta, but there must be somewhere there. Sorry, I cannot remember the exact name in Indonesian. Hope this helps."

Thanks to Matselah, Zoyra, and to JohnnyCool for the detailed and helpful information. And thanks to no.idea for the humour. I think I will see if i can get the detergent at Ace and also find some borak to make my own. If I end up with a successful batch from the borak and baking soda I'll post the info here just in case there are others without those full-time walking, talking, gardening, ever-so-useful pembantus.
