Long fingernails??

What's the deal with the long fingernails on men out here? It seems every Balinese man, regardless of age, has at least one disgusting long-ass fingernail, if not more. On top of that, even some of the expats who have been out here for some time have adopted this look. Some men in the US have long fingernails; we call 'em 'cokeheads'. I don't think that's an issue out here, unless they are out on the beach snorting sand or something. Is there any explanation for this??

I had long fingernails when I first arrived in Bali. Long fingernails + eating with your hands = not such a good idea. Learned this the hard way. and I don't get why guys have that one long fingernail. They did that in Vietnam too. I'm convinced it's because they wanted to pick their noses.

Since some fingernails grow back fast for like in 2 weeks, I think most people just forget to cut them early or have no time too. Also, most natives who work as farmers need not to cut them really short since it could make their fingertips raw while working on soils.

From what I have understood it is a status symbol demonstrating that the person uses their brain for work rather than their hands. A person who works with their hands would break that long nail very quickly.
