Texting internationally?

Has anyone figured out a way to send a text to, say an USA number? Also, I bought a new Nokia X6 the other day and placed my SIM card into it, but it said there was a registration error (no it's not locked) I haven't used it since end of August when I was in Bali last but it doesn't have that error in my old nokia. Any help? Also.. I keep forgetting that everyone calls it sms messaging instead of texting. I

I have no problem txting to any world number (use country prefix) - just do it!

Better to get a new sim card, old ones expire if you don't top them up regularly.

I figured as much. Texting to the USA is difficult though. I have tried to just plug in the number with the country code, etc, and no can do. I'm not sure if it's because our cell phone system here is completely different than most Countries I think.

I have never had a problem before to Australia. I try to stick to email these days. I wonder if there is a free SMS service available. I know Google talk offered free SMS a while ago.

My husband, who is in indonesia, and I, in California sms all day and night long, i am fairly certain it is alot cheaper to do it with an Indo sim card/package than a U.S. one....

Forgive me if this is too obvious - but are you replacing the initial 0 of the US number with a +1 ?

Maybe it's the phone. Most phones have locks or can only be used exclusively to a certain network or simcard. I think a phone can be used either networks is called open line phone especially for prepaid.

It's quite possible that I may have just completely blanked on trying to get this whole thing to work. There is a kind of messenger you can use to text people called Chikka. I use it to send sms messages to people in Indonesia while I'm in the US. It goes to their phone, and they are able to send it back to you but it goes to your computer (if it goes to your phone, there is a fee) however I believe it only works with those who have XL. Not entirely sure though.

Is your phone tri band or dual band. Can you use it for voice calls with a local sim?If so you should have no problems texting.

texting can be a pain from bali to usa. the only way it works with regularity for my wife and i is if i, from america, text to her number, in bali, then she can respond. if she simply enters my number it will work 1 of 5 times maybe but if she responds to a us number it works every time

my wife is in bali and im in the us. I dont know why but our texts only work when she replies to mine, no big deal if you text often but every now and then she calls me si that i will text her so that she will return it. I have tried from there too and it seems to be hit and miss. she uses xl and i use T-mobile also chikka, i tried it before, they sent fine to her but replying never worked and with chikka if there isnt at least one reply chikka will stop allowing texts to prevent spam, so no bueno for us. when i text her the format is: +62819******** and i think when she texts me it is +1503******* or maybe +01503******* i forget now but maybe someone else can straighten us up on sms from indonesia EDIT: oops i guess i already posted on this

Mat Thanks for the 'top up' info. That was going to be a question I had re: phone credit in Bali. I was there in June - purchased a cheap Nokia and a new SIM. Even though I have some credit value remaining I seem to recall that it expired at end of July. Do you know if this means that I can top up the same number? or do I need to purchase a completely new SIM with a new number? Wanting to stay in touch with home when I'm there next in a couple of weeks. BaliHIC

As far as i know you can not port an old number to a new sim and i think once they are expired they are trash, not 100% sure though

Throw the old sim away and get a new one.
